Nobody believes Bartomeu's lies. He's just doing this to save face. He's trying to make it look like he did everything he possibly could to stop Messi from leaving. Messi's probably already told him to fuck off, so he's just trying to do this to make Messi look like the bad guy. According to Sky, there was a poll of Barca fans in Marca last night about whether Messi should be allowed to leave on a free. 65% said he should.

I expect when Messi comes out publicly, he'll say he loves Barcelona, the fans etc, but he wants a new challenge and he wants the board to respect his wishes and the intended clause in his contract and let him leave for free.
