It's a power play in the media now.

According to Sky, there was a poll of Barca fans in Marca last night about whether Messi should be allowed to leave on a free. 65% said he should.

I expect when Messi comes out publicly, he'll say he loves Barcelona, the fans etc, but he wants a new challenge and he wants the board to respect his wishes and the intended clause in his contract and let him leave for free.
