Why are we convinced City will pay a fee for Messi? Barca's lawyers, who have now been sacked by Barca, advised Messi he could leave on a free. FIFA have put out guidance on extending clauses and contracts to cover the unusual end to the season. Why wouldn't we let Messi & his lawyers fight it out first with Barca - especially with Barca fans seemingly on Messi's side. I really hope we get him & I equally hope we get him on a free so Bartomeu and the board are screwed!

Because that'll take months and Messi doesn't have that. It's like negotiating a hostage release.

Nobody has suggested paying Barça but it’s a possibility we may have too if Messi has this wrong. If his contract states a date, then he’s wrong, if it states ‘x’ Days after the season ends then the club are wrong. Only a handful of people know the truth at present but the leak the club knew he was off in June/July is telling and could go in Messi’s favour.

How about Messi says he is signing for city and believes he can do so for free he signs for City but deposits a seasons wages in lawyers account or with Barca and say that his back up position is the webster ruling and he has bought out his contract but will sue to get it back at later date so that he can focus on starting the season in time because Barca would not allow negotiation or legal issues to be resolved
