I only learned it from on here to be fair, I always thought the same as you.

From memory, I think Phelan had been out injured for about 6 weeks in the build up to the game.

David Brightwell had been filling in for him and had been a disaster.

City were praying Phelan would be back in time and I think they rushed him back when he wasn’t fully fit.

I could be wrong, but that’s how I remember it.

I feel as if it might be too late in his career, for his brain to adapt. Also, for some reason, he doesn't seem to dominate headers like you would expect.

It would take him about 2 days training to be better than the current level though, I imagine.

You discount who bought Phelan, the change in system and managers, going from one of the strongest back lines under Reid to one of the shittest under Horton, formations make players numpty, and under the right manager he was an outstanding defender, you disagree, fine, but don’t get above your station trying to be smart, it’s clear you’re challenged in that area...

In what way was he an outstanding defender? He could not tackle, could not pass a ball and constantly out of position, he was a speedboat without a driver.

If he was such a top class defender, then why did he play for Wimbledon, Manchester City, Chelsea and Everton? None of whom were any good at the time. He was also nowhere near good enough to play for England, hence why he played for ROI.

He was the British record fee for a full back. He was no where near top class.

Now that sounds right, its funny how time plays tricks with your memory.

I also feel that is the case now. The problem is if this works and we do get him cheaper ( Kind of like Sane's transfer) it would go down as a Txiki masterclass but if it fails it may have severe repercussions as this is one of our major problem areas and I would not want us going into the new season with a weak defence. But it looks like nobody knows squat but hopefully, City have figured out a solid second choice center back if this game of poker goes sideways.

No one else are willing to pay what they want and unless a team comes along and offers the player twice as much we are in the pound seat to seal the deal
