Very costly as in Ronaldo/Maguire level transfer, yes.

But I imagine they will take that risk if they have to.

No not from a legal stand point. Lot and ifs and buts but if that clause is the legal argument and if his buyout is the reported 700m then if Messi lost the case he would be liable for that figure. A judge may decide to lower the fee (probably likely since he’s in his last year) but that amount could still be 250m say. Now if Messi doesn’t pay that himself Barca are allowed to seek it from whoever he signs for.
Coupled with an expensive legal trial, we are talking way more than maguire.

I imagine we’ll end up paying a maguire fee to avoid any possibility of a trail. Unless messi’s legal position is solid!

His buyout clause isn't 700 mil apparently, that was last season. He now doesn't have one.

So it would possibly be condiderably less than Maguire.

So it's now a Webster 'buy-out'? If that is routine, then maybe Barcelona are better off just negotiating an amicable exit knowing that a transfer fee will be somewhat limited.

Scored 51 18/19. then 31 19/20 - his worst return for 12 years and he isn't getting any younger. Past records mean nothing it is the future and he is well in decline.

A 20 goal decline in a season suggests he is past his best at 33. He is currently a rat leaving a sinking ship and I would kick him as far away as I could, rather than pay his stupid wages which will rip the team apart causing long term damage.
A lot depends on who he is playing with.

Also, he has obviously been shit/declined since 2013 as in the 13/14 season he only scored 41 compared to the 60 he got the season before and the 73 the season before that!

"You have to ask yourself why Liverpool and Utd are not interested and the answer is, he simply doesn't fit in with the ethos of the clubs"
Is this from that shit programme where 4 sycophant juornos talk bollocks - I have genuinely forgotten the name temporally it is that long since I have watched it?

I thought that I heard it had been dumped

Might be worth seeing on catch-up - just to see the squirming;-)

73 goals lol. Just that that number sink in.

73 goals and 35 assists.

It's basically 2x as many goals and 2x as many assists as Aguero and KDB's best seasons combined.

It does make you wonder what he's going to do if he comes here. The mard arse brigade are unhappy with his 31 goals and 26 assists in 44 games last year, but you have to remember that's the worst season of Barca's recent history.

Suarez falls off a cliff. Messi has to become a midfielder because there's no creativity in midfield, Griezman's arrival has them experimenting with formations and roles to force him into the side, the coach leaves midseason because the football is so bad, and the Spanish equivalent of Eddie Howe takes over.

Mid season Messi finds out the board has paid a PR company to attack him and his family on social media, coronavirus hits, the political aspect of the club goes into hyperdrive building up to the election.

I expect him to be a lot closer to his 18/19 output of 51 goals and 21 assists in 50 games. Maybe a bit lower because he won't have to do everything himself, but maybe the better players around him compensates for that.
