Someone compared Messi to Michael Jordan and the Bulls, and I think that's a good comparison, Messi is going to be making people money for decades after he's retired. If you can tie City to that not just for 3 seasons as a player, but for a further 5 or 10 as some sort of City ambassador or even just as a very powerful ally, that'll be hugely profitable.

Negotiations are about what you're bringing to the table and as much as I love KDB the player, his brand is a mouse and Messi's is a hippo.

The equity (if it happens) or however Messi gets paid is only happening because the club will make so much money off him.

This is one of those rising tide/all boats situations. If Messi scores 50 goals next season, the guy who assisted 30 of them is going to get plenty of attention too.
