The only possible road block would be Barca somehow delaying the move past end of transfer window. Even then, every footy fan on earth would rage at Barca should he somehow miss games or a chunk of the season due to legal nonsense. More than a club? If Bartemeu rejects him moving tomorrow and we go to FIFA to get a provisional transfer certificate and the fee goes to a tribunal

Is it possible to walk away once the fee has been settled so we don’t get stiffed?

Does Messi go on his own, they decide a fee then we move in? How exactly does the process work?

So... The player goes to FIFA who issue his paperwork and there ends their involvement. The paperwork is temporary but allows him to sign for his new club.
Barça will contest it and start legal proceedings which could take years to get to court, once they do a judge will look at it and award a settlement figure if one is due or say Messi was right so fuck off Barça. However, if we have to pay a fee it’ll be compared to other such cases, Ronaldo the most likely case. A player in the last year of a contract (Ronaldo had 2 left I believe?) his age and his wage etc. The fee is likely to be sub €100m at the fake Ronny went for €100m.
So we then have to pay the fee... But have 12months to do so. In essence Barça are unlikely to see a penny inside 2 years. It’s not in their interest to go to court, and all Messi has to do is sit it out, his dad will arrive tomorrow and they’ll agree a fee Messi pays to walk away on a ‘free’. That fee will then be more than likely deducted from the package we will give the player. This is why it’s in Messi’s interest to walk for nothing.

It's not our problem as fan's and all our players have been well paid and looked after, which is why almost all of the top ones have stayed with us all their career.

Messi, even at 33 is a one off. He is the best and most well known player in the world and as such everyone wants him. What he fetches to the club transcends what he does on the field, even though we know the British media will do a hatchet job on him if he does sign for us. Our owners will do whatever it takes to get him if they can and rightly so.
