A War On Three Fronts

The Internal Market Bill triggers confrontation with the EU, reopening what everyone thought was a settled debate on the Withdrawal Agreement with a GE fought over getting the WA ratified, and making any future deal unlikely. In effect we have gone back to the autumn of 2019.

The Bill also opens a second front with London confronting Edinburgh and Cardiff over what was again settled debate on devolution by taking back devolved powers and will no doubt fuel Scottish nationalism even further. It also reopens division in NI as we are back to the Irish border question which has to be either in land or in the Irish Sea. We have had four years of talking about, thought we had it resolved, but now that we have reneged on our agreement we are back to endlessly talking about it. The potential for sparking old troubles is obvious.

Finally we have our third front, the pandemic, which hasn’t gone away and Is a strain on everyone as we fight to keep it in check.

After four years of this never ending shit the question is how do we resolve this never ending shit? We are out of the EU and there isn’t any option of getting back in, not that the E27 would be open to it even if there was an option. We drop out of the EU economic comfort zone in less than four months and hard transition onto the cold comfort of WTO terms and lose the security, data, regulatory frameworks within which we currently operate. The disruption of which will fuel nationalism in Scotland and potentially Wales. There is also the potential of EU sanctions being levied for breaking the WA but we will leave that aside for now to concentrate on what will happen.

Then there will be the diplomatic fallout as relations with Dublin especially and the other major Capitols will be sub-zero and the rest of Europe isn’t going to best pleased with all this palaver during a pandemic.

So we have an external front, the EU, an internal front, other countries in our Union and a health front that, ironically requires a degree of international cooperation to combat successfully.

The question is how does the UK resolve the conflict on these three fronts? Can the UK as a state realistically survive fighting on these three fronts simultaneously? Why are we fighting on three fronts rather than concentrating on the common threat, the pandemic? What is the strategy? Is there a strategy?

And in a pandemic you are not just deciding for yourself. Your actions directly impact on others. You have to think of the welfare of others not just yourself, especially those who may be more at risk than yourself.

The irony of it is incredible is it not.

I say that as somebody who is nominally a Labour leaver, what has caused so much friction and done so much damage to the fabric of this nation is Farage and the ERGs obsessions, they will not stop until they get what they want, I posted the other day, they will not compromise and now is the time to compromise because it can be revisited again when times are better.

I say that as somebody who is nominally a Labour leaver, what has caused so much friction and done so much damage to the fabric of this nation is Farage and the ERGs obsessions, they will not stop until they get what they want, I posted the other day, they will not compromise and now is the time to compromise because it can be revisited again when times are better.

The question for the ERG and Farage types is what DO they want? What do they want the UK to be? Is it a new empire or a service focused economy like Singapore or is it just a relatively regulatory free system like the US?

The funny thing on Farage is he campaigned for Trump and said he'll move to the US if Brexit is a failure. Trump however has locked down EB1/H1B visas so ironically Farage will never get a green card until Trump goes.

The ‘what next’ also applies to the internal battle with Scotland and Wales. London takes back devolved powers and imposes measures resisted by the devolved Parliaments, which fuels more nationalism, so London resists demands for a further referendum, and the cycle and conflict ramps up.

What next? Demonstrations? Violence? Scotland declaring UDI?

Every action by the Govt just begs the question ‘what next’? Because the only answer appears to more of the same that caused the problems in the first place.

In my humble opinion, its pretty fucking bleak...

The 1st Phase of Project Divide & Conquer is over. Vladimir Putin can now focus his disinformation and fragmentation policies on the remaining EC countries. Within 10 years he will have ripped apart the worlds biggest defence force, the military might of the combined European Union armed forces, without ever firing a shot, just using the power of the World Wide Web. This leaves him free to, well, who knows, maybe re-annex the old Iron Curtain countries, he's already started this...

Using the the same weapon-less means utilised in dividing Europe, the USA is already ripping itself apart, a puppet of a president happily fermenting civil unrest across racial lines. Civil war is looming as armed militia are already patrolling the streets, apparently unhindered by any federal intervention. That phase of Putin's plan is well on track, the USA is eating itself from within.

Putin's friend, China is flexing on all its neighbours in SE Asia, India, Taiwan, Japan are all locked in disagreement against various perceived Chinese land grab operations in the seas of the Chinese coast. China is busy undertaking a huge build up of its armed forces, launching two new aircraft carriers, churning out brand new 5th generation stealth fighters, building and launching new type 52 cruise missile destroyers at the rate of 1 every 8 weeks, a James Bond style underground nuclear submarine bunker, housing an unknown amount of vessels... India is deeply concerned, so is busily trying to increase and update its own armed forces, with the Kremlin arms sales teams licking their lips in anticipation...

In 10 years time the world will be a very dangerous fragmented place. There will be new super powers in play, the old "superpowers" will have self-destructed. All bar one that is. And mostly with thanks to the insidious powers of manipulation using social media. A "victimless" weapon we have become aware of far to late, and due to our addiction, are unable to fight back.

So, you ask, what next?

In reality it is astonishing that there are still people who have this "fuck everyone else, if they don't like it tough" attitude. Maybe they should fuck off and let some sensible people put in place some damage limitation.

If Johnson is left in charge with Cummings pulling the strings and a majority of the 364 Tory MPs prepared to nod through any illegal shit proposed by the government and vote themselves out of any say, then I can see the United Kingdom becoming disunited before too long.

The question is whether there are more than 40 Tory MPs who are prepared to join the opposition in stopping the madness, and whether the opposition can join together and put forward a coherent alternative. I'm not hopeful.

The only path out of this mess is that we have several years of recession/low growth and a sensible government is elected who take us back into the EU. If it happens quickly there might be a chance to stop the breakup of the UK and heal some of the wounds these dickheads have inflicted on our "friends".

When the real pain hits next year the working class Brexiteers will get the shock of their lives and if there is a political Messiah that's his/her chance. Whilst I like Starmer I don't think he's got quite the charisma but one will come. Politics is cyclical and it's going to take our chickens coming home to roost before the adults take charge again. This will hopefully coincide with a post-covid boom.

I used to be proud to be British but now I'm ashamed. We are a country with a high percentage of fools ruled by a generation of lightweight politicians. We are in deep shit.

I honestly think they want an England and I said England specifically to be reimagined as it was in the days of their childhood. Long summer days, cricket on the village green, God Save the Queen played as the TV closes for the night, warships circumnavigating the globe flying the white ensign and Churchill giving patriotic speeches on the radio.

Mogg has been called for the Minister for Victorian England and I think that is apt, they long for a world that no longer exists and cannot be recreated that is why they are impossible to compromise with as what they want is no longer possible unless somebody invents a time machine.

Like it or not, we have been part of the EU since the early 70s and there are valid reasons why we should leave, I have to say though that the valid reasons I hear from the likes of Farage and the ERG don't resonate with me at all and if leaving the EU means it leads to greater English exceptionalism then I don't want any part of that, they look backwards when we should be looking forwards.
