Marcus Rashford lobbying govt to help vulnerable children

If sterling did the same thing would he have got an mbe.
I doubt it..Clough won two European cups and didn't get a Knight hood.
Taggart won one
Ferguson got his award for his charity work I believe, not for winning an unimportant football competition. There's some bollocks posted in this thread.

Edit: must be my age and fading memory but it was for 'services to football', just after they'd done the treble.

Wonder why Old Mother Riley hasn't been knighted - he did massive charity work down at The Swamp - charitable sendings off and gratuitous pens when MANUre needed a leg up in a game. Same for Howie Redshirt.

Would Sterling have received an MBE?. Why did Fergie get a gong and Clough never?
Who cares, I have no love for any one who represents United but Rashford spoke out about childhood poverty and made the government listen.
If his campaign results in only one child not going hungry he should get a knighthood for that.
He would certainly be more deserving than some of the Sir's & Dame's this country has given the title.

All I know is Rashford is a fucking star for what he's done, and any recognition he gets is thoroughly deserved.
Totally agree as does Karen I think, I'd love to have said everyone agrees but sadly some people are incapable of actually thinking. To paraphrase Marvin, “It’s the people you meet in this life that really get you down.”

I think it is the political aspect that is an issue for me. He has a voice and has used it well no doubt. I know people who have done considerably more over a long period and get virtually no recognition. I will however think very highly of him when he refuses the award to highlight even more those who have and those who do not.
I agree he has made a difference and hope he uses his position to do more, well done Marcus.

Yes there is.
By people who believe everything they see on slysporrs.
Taggart got his knighthood cos he was tge manager of the scum

For what it's worth I to think he has done wonders for highlighting this problem he has used his position as a high profile footballer to good use. My only moan is I have met lots of people over the last year who give up their time, health, and money to help run food banks and kitchens etc without some much as a thank you from the general public.
If in 5 years time Rashford is still doing this charity work than by all means award a MBE. In reality he has been doing it for 5 minutes and gets an award when people have been doing this work for decades without a thank you let alone a MBE, or even listen to by local and national government.
It's not Rashford that's the problem it's the awards being used to gain popularity by the government that's the problem. If anything Rashford himself has been used by the government.
I hope Rashford carries on the fight against poverty, and I think he will as he seems a nice caring lad.

Pretty much my view. There's loads in my sector who have given a lifetime of this work.

It's as if Rashford didn't grow up in the same conditions he is campaigning for...

Whether you think it was a PR job who really gives a shit as long as people get meals on their plates
Hopefully the meal's on the plates take priority to I phone and sly TV payment s

I'm sure you agree with his sentiment - and so do I. Yet you feel comfortable that only those that have a priveleged position are deserved of your acclaim? This is where society stuffs up. Why do we pedestal those in priviledged positions to win awards, rather than questioning why it's so easy for them to win such an award? We rarely get our own voices heard - because we're not famous. Time to look into the mirror pal, and realise that perhaps we should all be looking to make 'all' our voices heard - famous or not.

Sorry I think you misunderstand, In the context of how these awards are distributed I have no issue with Rashford receiving one. It does not mean I agree with how the awards are dished out, similarly I do not agree with footballers receiving 300k in wages but would be happy if De Bruyne signed a new contract on that money. Life is full of paradoxes such as these however Its clear these issues do not affect you.

Also where you highlight his privilege, I see a young black man from a disadvantaged background, trying to use his recently found ‘privilege’ to try and improve society. The fact he is now privileged does not lessen his achievement but only makes his achievements more admirable to have such a social conscience at such a young age and to an issue which will probably not affect his direct family for many generations to come.

However I am sure the gnashing of teeth, over this award, not by you, would be just as vehement, if it was a City player receiving it or is it because Rashford does not benefit from that ‘privilege’.

Yes, it is getting an award over the other guy i mentioned and not what he did , what he did was great but so were the nurses saving lives whilst risking their own and their families , boris thinks football will love him, that is what this about

When you look at the guidelines for nominating / receiving a gong, clearly this was a popularist award. Who nominated him? (Not a criticism of Sir Marcus but of the system)

"Honours nominations for MBEs are considered all year long. However, the honours process involves a consideration period of around 12 - 18 months from receipt of your nomination, and the nominee must still be involved in the service for which they are being nominated, so it is important to get the nomination in the queue as soon as possible."

I though Rashford only voiced his concern about 6 months ago so how does the consideration period of 12-18 months work ?

Again not knocking Rashford just asking how it took less than normal. That said Major Tom was knighted very quickly as well. Perhaps in special circumstances you can fast track.

Again another popularity vote (and to make sure he was alive when he got it in his case!)
