How bad was it at Maine Road?

Read some stuff in the week and a few guys from London firms said they respected City firms as they were always up for a fight and they didn't like going to Maine Road due to the side streets and it was easy for City firms to get them into dead ends and corner them.

I started going regularly in 85 and never really seen much of it. Think it was a combination of where we stood(windy corner) from 85-93 and me a my dad always going to Maine Road excalty the same same, think maybe he was shielding me away from that as in 85 I was 10.

The worst I seen was the Derby in 89, Leeds boxing Day when it all kicked off in the North Dtand(think that was 89 or 90) and bizarrely Oldham when away fans were in the North Stand. It was 3-3 at half time and turned very nasty.

Seen a couple of fights outside but my dad quickly changed course. Early 90's and my teenage years I never really seen anything.

Was it bad at Maine Road or quiet in compressions l with other grounds at the time?

I'll start again
Millwall late in the 90s was 1 of the biggest kick offs I've seen
3-0 Win and it all went off in the North Stand big time
Prior to that it had been a licking off Before as they all got off the Train at Stockpile
And after around Rusholme going back to Picadilly

The last time I had a fight at Maine Road was Vs Newcastle in 1984.
They brought @ 10k as they were going for promotion from Division 2.
A few were taking liberties as there were so many of them so I got into a couple of scuffles as I walked past them and then again after the match as I walked back to my car.
The previous season Vs WHU and I ended up walking back to my car down Lloyd Street North with the ICF closely following behind complete with police escort. And a big crew of Blues itching to get at them, but the police escort keeping them apart.
As the front guys from the ICF drew level with me I was itching to blindside the closest Cockney twat and punch him in his big gob but I bottled out at the last second .
Mainly because I was with my Dad and he was under the impression that I was a good lad with a good job and a young family, and not an experienced football hooligan.

Remember the pair of them very well

Didn’t they get off at Stockport to battle with the United fans on their way to an away game?
Total nutters

They are pretty much the only 3 of any significance that I remember, plus a few scuffles outside. We used to park in St Edwards school car park off Yew Tree Lane, so we had to walk past the away coaches on the way out (we were usually in the ground before they arrived), and there was always tension. After that Leeds game especially.

Chelsea on a Friday night towards the end of 83/84 season. It was a live TV game and they were heading for promotion, their nutters were all over the place, it even kicked off in the Main Stand.
Same season as the Newcastle game above.
I kept a very low profile after that game and went back to Middleton with a couple of mates.
We went in the Wilton Arms in Rhodes and it was Chocca with Chelsea fans. Fortunately they were in a good mood as they had won,but a pub in Middleton was the last place I expected to find a group of Chelsea fans.

The newcastle game in 84 i was 10. Parked up in the side streets with family, with running battles all over.

remember a transit van with geordies in it drive past and someone out of no bricked the wind screen.
sat in the car with 2 lads scrapping on the bonnet!

I wont lie , it was a buzz to see it. Never really got involved as i got older though.

Believe me the" buzz" was great when you were a teenager/young man. Even if you were outnumbered/outfought you had to be on your toes and be planning your next move to make sure that you got away in one piece and avoided getting a good shoeing. I got plenty of punches to the mouth/face and kicked all over my body. But it was like a drug. I couldn't stop getting involved with any trouble at City games. From 1970- 1984.

Remember it well they Kicked off in Picadilly Gardens well 4 too

Bad? Lol.

Young black kids riding on their bikes round the Labyrinth of two up two down streets near Maine road to tip off Donald and Mickey and the boys. Waiting in ambush behind a gable-end to give it to some firm, oblivious to their 'welcome' to Manchester greeting. Rival gangs would often scarper down the alleyways to meet their fate, but blues were at the other end waiting. As effective as Orca whales trapping a frightened shoal of scurrying sardines. Fuckin' bedlam!

I wasn't part of our firms, but when it came on top you either went toe-to-toe or your legged it yourself. And have a few battle scars from back then. It was how it was. Some games you could just feel the tension knowing it was gonna blow, and it did!

No mobile phones to film a bit of handbags at 10 paces bollocks, and CCTV cameras were in their infancy. A phone would have been stamped on sharpish, typically by a 16 hole Doc martens boot. Oxblood was the preferred colour of polishing them with a bit of spilled claret.

Those where the days my friend, I thought they'd never end...

The 'match day experience' wasn't rammed down our throats either. Just a knuckle or two now n' then ; )

Mid 80's v West Ham and loads of them going in the Main Stand doing the Oakie Cokie. They then congregated after the game at the far end of Maine Road and then marched / charged up Maine Road chanting Irons Irons Irons..... Kicking City fans all over the place.

The following season they tried it again and after the game the biggest City crew I'd ever seen was outside waiting. Half of Moss Side's young males were there, chased and battered the Hammers. They stood out like a sore thumb mostly wearing yellow Slazenger jumpers.
