The ones that stick in the mind with me that happened inside or outside Maine Rd are -

Pretty much every Derby

Leeds smashing the Platt Lane benches up and having 2 blocks replaced with blue plastic seats.

Boro in the FA Cup behind the North Stand in 97, and when they came in the North Stand towards the end of a league match - might be early 00s

Vague memories of a couple of matches at home to Stoke kicking off too, maybe late 80s and early 90s.

I've only been going since 1987 hence why I can't recall any previous to that.
 
There probably wasnt a ground in the country where you didnt have to have your wits about you. Leeds, Newcastle, Liverpool, Everton, Birmingham City, Spurs, West Ham and Chelsea were all lively places to go as an away fan in the early mid 80s. Due to its location and surroundings Maine Road would have been as intimidating as any.

Funny enough I used to go and watch Stockport the odd few games in a season where it could also be surprisingly lively, usually against the likes of Bradford, Burnley, Blackpool and Port Vale.

On one occasion I saw an almighty dust up at Macc Town when Bangor City brought a large following of twats across the border, saw them play an FA Trophy final reply against Northwich at Stokes old ground and once again they had a large following of absolute lunatics.

The ever present threat of getting your head kicked in did make it interesting back then, but not something I would like to return too. I would however take those days over now for the overall day out at football and the atmospheres could be ten times better than now even with a half empty ground.

My feelings exactly Purplenose. I am 64 now,so would have no chance in a scrap with a younger guy and I cant run very fast either.
But the match day experience is garbage now,compared to the 70s and 80s. Too many happy clappers and tourists for my liking.

Hurleys got done when we played Sheff Wednesday, pretty much straight after the Sheff match buses got bricked while dropping the fans off at Picc. Plenty of Pringle Diamond jumpers were available around our way that night, someone I know was involved.
 
Remember a big riot on the forecourt at Maine Road before the Chelsea game 88-89, the Spurs cup quarter in 93, my Spurs mate says it's the most scared he's ever been at a match, their escort was getting continually attacked right back to the station.
 
City at Maine was very tasty for a lot of firms coming in . I know quite a lot from Leeds and they always said back in the day City were always on it

There was hurleys golf and hurleys sport one season in the second division was us sheff Wednesday, Newcastle And Pompey all at the top Memorable games both home and away.
More battling in town than around main road in some ways .

If I remember correctly, the rags were playing Everton away. A fair few of us went to Victoria station to wait for them. Nothing metarialised from it mind, good job probably as only about 20 of us. Smash and grab was more important for others;-)

The week after the on the train back from Huddersfield in the 2nd reply of the cup quite a few lads had bandages and plasters across their face from the previous wed night

The only time I ever got assaulted with a weapon by one of Her Majesties Constabulary was outside Bolton Trinity Street Station by an Police Sergeant who gave me a whack across the back of my legs with his signalling stick.It was after Bolton beat us in a League Cup game 3-0 in 1971. The twat.
