Pep's contract situation | 2 year extension confirmed! (pg1817)

You simply can't have a manager going into the last year of his contract, however good he is.

A manager demands loyalty from his players, how can players repay that loyalty, when the manager himself might not be here in 7 months time.

Also talk of waiting to see if Messi signs before committing to an extension is insulting to the rest of the dressing room.

This is the correct answer. And on the will he/won't he debate lets really just boil it down to the basics. Here is what we know:
  1. Pep's contract expires in June
  2. We discussed a new contract with him this last offseason
  3. Nothing got done
Why did nothing get done? The simplest answer here, which is usually right, is because Pep thinks there is a high chance he is leaving in the summer, and given the start to the season and his awful body language that probably will not have changed. The plan is likely to reconvene midway through the season (we make dumb decisions sometimes but there is a 0% chance we leave this until June) and announce either an extension or a new manager early in the new year, like in Pellegrini's final season, around the time we start reaching out to agents for summer signings. Also, I don't think it's a coincidence at all that Pochettino is unaffiliated at the moment.

Okayyyyyy.

Did this not constitute a physical and psychological break from competitive football?

A physical break, yes. Psychologically, a whole new set of issues.

What hasn't been available is a proper preseason, with the chance to work with the team and new players on tactical aspects of the game. Something that I think is hugely important when you have a manager like Pep.

Good answer, mate, and I’m not going to argue against that. What I find hard to accept, though, is that players are knackered because there was no break.

No, but our players have played a lot since and are not getting much recovery time between games. We are not the only team affected by that though. Players like ours are simply asked to play too often and after the intensity of our two big seasons, the demands placed on them (no other team has gone after so many trophies so strongly) may have taken a toll that isn't helping alongside other problems they face.

I don't know how significant this is. We are all searching for answers as to why such a technically strong squad, when most players are available, is not hitting the heights.

I'm sure that there's a lot of reasons and that it will take time to resolve and that the personnel may need freshening up further still to put us back where we want to be. That doesn't mean we can't be winning more silverware this season but it's going to be a tough season but it's one where we still have everything to play for (again).

This is the first time since the takeover I feel the quality of the team has gone backwards, maybe it's because Pep hasn't committed so it's affecting performance from our players. Either way, sign up Pep or go.

He may we’ll be the best manager we’ve ever had. He’s undoubtedly given us the best football we’ve ever seen in Mcr. What‘s concerning some posters is whether he’s now had his day. Agree or not, that’s a valid concern. So why attempt to shut down debate?
This team is transitioning from the best team of the last ten years to a new team, if we can do it winning things great if we can’t then top 4 finishes will have to do. It’s better than most great teams do when a cycle comes to an end.
What we want next season with a completed squad in place is the best manager we possibly can in charge. First choice Pep because over the last 12 years he’s proved to be the best.
If he chooses to move on , because he thinks it’s time,so be it we will too, and be fine, but we won’t be throwing out the baby with the bathwater if we can help it. Just because some fans expect to win all the time.

The team isn’t transitioning though into a new team. It’s just the old team that was incredible going backwards in front of our eyes. That isn’t transition.

Great. We won't win anything at present, the way they are playing for him.
The whole 'weve got Guardiola' thing I thought licked his arse too much. I wonder if Bayern fans thought that? We as a club still seem starstruck with him. I'm sorry, we shouldn't be like that. If it'd not working with him, get him out. He's been great, but it's time to change.
Is it a newbie thing to slag off pep ?

People are forgetting we are playing in exceptional circumstances.
No preseason
No strikers since start of the season
No crowds
Theses factors are heavily influencing our play
One thing I’m certain of is that Pep has not lost his ability or his appetite to manage us.
Three players had covid and two more isolating, think people should calm it down

Good question. Some seem to forget we played our best EVER under him. You can't replicate that season after season... And this season NO ONE is immune from upsets/ injuries and the otherwise unexpected. I can't help but blame that sector of our fan base (obviously growing in number) who are pitifully greedy and petulant and simply expect our players to be in human and play perfectly every season. Yes we looked poor yesterday, it's football not a magic show. I get so F'ing sick of the whining and lack of respect some here show of our longstanding players and staff who pipe up only when the chips are down yet show up after we're flying like nothing ever happened. If you want to pull for a winner every season buy the league winners kit after they're crowned and wear it until they aren't top anymore: rinse and repeat. If we win Saturday vs. Sheffield were top 4-5 and in the thick of things in this tumultuous season in which everyone- players included- have been touched deeply by this pandemic. Weve played 5 bloody games FFS. Weve had major players injured all season. If you cant compose yourself and keep from throwing your rattle from the pram every time we don't win 4-0 find a new hobby.

How is it the old team, going backwards, Kompany and Silva gone, Aguero and Fernandinho in their last seasons . Of course it’s transitioning.
I agree. I think a new young team of Ederson, Cancelo, Diaz, Laporte, Ake, KDB, Foden, Bernardo, Torres, Jesus and Sterling is easily good enough to win another title. They just need time to get going in this crazy season.
