COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Tier 3 was working better than lockdown. It seems pretty clear that when you introduce a higher level of lockdown there is a surge of cases as loads of people go out as they're not going to be able do something for a while.
In the meantime kids keep spreading it in school and taking it home and infecting their households.
Schools need to close I'm afraid.
Another one.

The kids can learn online schools now have to close it's the only way otherwise we will be locked down till christmas the problem is also parents congregating outside school gates as well that should be banned I think it would be best that schools shut till April then we can reassess

They have to close schools now otherwise the lockdown will go on through Christmas. Schools should now close for christmas

I would hope schools are better prepared this time. If not, many kids, like my daughter will basically miss around a year of school.

I think some underestimate the impact of the closure of schools. Often by people who are not parents of school age children.

Mm aybe we are lucky but out of 50 form classes in the school there has not been one (knowingly) with Covid19. Just one class has had to self isolate as a pupil spent time with someone outside of school has had the virus.

this, give schools 2 weeks notice from this week that they'll close at the end of lockdown, say 4 December, 11 December at the latest for a month. Then put everyone in tier 3 from the 2nd, as we're pretty much doing that now by people's behaviour, so there's minimal cross-over. That way the marginal gains in lockdown can be enhanced by the kids now being off but adult interactions still being limited.

My heart goes out to all of you who have been badly affected by this awful situation we find ourselves in. Some of the posts have genuinely made me shed a tear or two. It must be fucking terrible to see a loved one pass because of this, weather directly or indirectly. Or a son or daughter struggling with being shackled. Or losing your job. Or worrying about your own health. Or all the other stuff that would take too long to list.
Its really strange that since lockdown my own issues with depression and alcohol have taken a bit of a back seat while I try to keep my parents safe. Im kind of hoping this shit will make us better people going forward.
It doesnt really matter what you think of boris or any of the other experts. What matters is how we treat our loved ones, and other people. In that respect we shouldnt need governing.
Im hoping this will become a bit of a leveller. Ive started to try and help others, instead of not giving a fuck. Not giving a fuck is easy. But caring about others and going out of your way is so rewarding.
Stop listening to people who think they are better than you because they wear a tie and live in london. If they were that smart they would be living in florida playing golf everyday. They are just bullshitters who normally dont really have to do a lot, they are not used to being held culpable. Dont be suprised when they bumble about fucking up at every turn. As a nation we decided that boris was the man to lead us. A man who regularly appeared on panel shows and was lampooned relentlessly. A very clever man, but not a leader. He couldnt wire a plug or put up a shelf. He would electrocute himself or put a nail in a pipe.
This isnt a political rant, its a humanist one. Look after your loved ones, make sure they are safe. Give them good advice. Advice you follow yourself. Dont worry about tiers, traffic lights, eat out to help out etc. Fuck all that. Dont worry about idiots mass gathering. Just take the measures needed to keep you and your family alive and stay safe. If we all do that (us decent people) then we will reap what we sow.
Sorry for the interruption im upset tonight
Far too many on here think this vivid 19 is a joke

Totally agree, this should be way beyond politics.

I remember listening to some news broadcast at Holyrood when lockdown first started in March. Nicola sturgeon was clapped by all when she said that this isn't an snp or a Conservative problem and everyone will be working together to get out of this mess. It was heartening at the time but needless to say every political leader has made things political to some extent or another.

Yes it's sad all round.

Not saying you're wrong but my lad's school is half closed anyway. More than half the kids are self isolating, including him. Some have had to twice already.

Our school, at least, is open in name only. It's a fiasco.

Things don't sound good there but some schools are doing a lot better so why should they have to close? (I am not saying this is your point, but are certainly others on here who are saying that).

e.g. My 15 y.o. son hasn't had to miss a single day since September. Out of his (very large) 'friendship group' one of his mates has had to self-isolate, and that's it.

Oh really? So kids who already missed nearly eight months school can just like that miss another six until April?
Having two primary school children whose behaviour deteriorated throughout lockdown and could again get worse. Don’t underestimate the importance of social interaction for the kids, daily structure for their well being. And for many kids this is their safe haven, their only hot meal. Many single parent families already struggling to cope. Home schooling is difficult for a short period of time let alone extended for months. That’s why we have teachers, they’re experts. And many kids can’t learn on line without equipment or infrastructure to assist.

Who looks after the kids whilst they are at home if parents are working? Some kids in my daughters class are way behind because either their parents didn’t teach as well during lockdown or they didn’t get any teaching at all when their parents were working and got shipped to a school during lockdown with kids of all ages . They are playing catch-up still on last year and the kids need the interaction with others their age.

These numbers are high enough the lockdown is unlikely to be eased on December 2. I think it will be extended to just before christmas
If it can get voted through Parliament, that is.

But I agree and think it would be a good idea to close schools and colleges for two weeks as part of that and have a proper lockdown for two weeks - the full hit, a proper STAY AT HOME lockdown.

Don't get me started on politics. In a pandemic, why the two main parties can't sit round a table and agree on the best way forward for the country as a whole is beyond me. It's just a point scoring exercise!

Labour and Liberals both suggested this but the Tories tossed the idea out. Something like 'if you want a say in what is happening you should win an election'. So we have who we have and that is good as there is only one party to blame for this fiasco.

I do agree with you, but kids only actually missed 14½ weeks of school during the last lockdown as there was two weeks of Easter, the May half term and the six weeks in Summer with all that too.

A two week proper school circuit breaker is absolutely needed soon, but certainly not to April as he suggests

The rumours are very strong that Modena results are good, not that the UK has a specific interest.

No, I agree with that, I think schools should be the absolute last thing to shut. Just reflecting that for ours at least, they're not fully open anyway.

Any news on when the Oxford Phase 3 results are going to be announced?

Nobody knows. Blinded trial; there's an independent monitoring committee that unblinds only when pre-specified conditions are met, specifically the number of symptomatic cases. Anyone who believes they know when data is out is mistaken.

Should be soon, but whether tomorrow, next week, or next year can't be known. I guess the longer it takes, the more likely it is to be positive (you'd get half the number of cases if it's 100% effective vs 0% effective).

Same comments apply to the Moderna trial; that's one step further as they've said they have sufficient cases to unblind, so we know the timescale, but nobody yet knows if its positive or not.
