For what it is worth the GM total today is an utterly absurd 3858 - miles above anything it ever has been. That's only up 2359 on yesterday.

That is 84% of the whole NW cases today as most other areas in the NW went down for the reason I guess Manchester went up. As a made up example - someone living in Warrington but tested at uni in Manchester got swapped. So Warrington goes down a case and Manchester up.

Multiply that thousands of times and it seems to be what has happened.

Thanks for posting that As you will see from my posts above it is. The Universities are clearly the biggest driver of the numbers. Its odd to decide to do this now though. Presumably it was upping numbers in London too much so they finally noticed!

The one good thing out of this chaos. A Northern Assembly with powers just came a step nearer.

She is non Covid but very poorly with breathing problems. She has been moved wards in the middle of the night to accommodate more Covid patients. I can hear the noise in the background when I phone and it sounds so intense. I don’t know how they do it. They deserve a medal. 170 plus people in Warrington hospital with Covid currently. 15 in ICU. 10 died at the weekend alone. The hospital is full to bursting. The stress must be incredible.

Manchester - the city - not the GM county - alone accounted for 69% of all the cases added to total in the NW today. Though we have no clue really how many of these were from actually today or even the past few days amidst many others reallocated from the past few weeks. Or indeed how many came from other GM boroughs in that process.
 
Don’t understand the swapping of cases. Rates in Manchester went through the roof when the universities went back so surely these cases were the students. Lots of students from down south come to Manchester yet those areas didn’t show a huge increase. Doesn’t make sense.
 
So the figures are all being re-jigged again, suddenly the south looks much better and our numbers take a jump.

In a matter of days they will be working through the data ready for us coming out of lockdown and reverting back the the tier system. I can't help feeling lockdown will be released in phases and we will be down the pecking order.

The lass who does our accounts says last Monday we took the highest number of passengers & money for over 2 years. No wonder the pandemic is going nowhere in the North East

Cant argue with you. Buses and particularly trains, seem pretty quiet here. My MIL uses buses daily and she says shes often the only one on the bus

Yes i still have connections to nurse friends and it has been a nightmare , mental health problems and PTSD are widespread, before they were gagged we got a lot of frontline stories, i find people just take them for granted and dont like hearing what they have been through since march, they carry a huge burden . In normal times you take patients home with you in your mind , when we were losing 900 a day i would suggest the strain was more intense than the people who were told to stay in their nice comfy homes

Paves the way for these methods to be used on other viruses and illnesses too. This is something mentioned by some virologists at the start of the vaccine hunt: the off shoot of all this research means it could be hugely significant for other research (heck....finally ridding us of the common cold, but potentially more darker illnesses out there too).

Maybe 2020 will look different to future historians.

I am happy to give the Government credit for doing what they have regarding the economy and the support they have given such as the furlough scheme, however I struggle giving any credit for them having the highest death rate in Europe especially given that we had the benefit of seeing what happened in Spain and Italy.

Not too sure that argument exists anymore as Spain and Italy also saw what happened in Spain and Italy, yet are still experiencing a bad 2nd wave. I don't think there was much the government could have done to stop it. The fact most people don't show any symptoms makes it all but impossible to control.

What they have done makes sense. Admittedly, they should have done it sooner. Nothing to be paranoid about.
