Whoosh!! He wasn’t suggesting Pep committed on the strength of Messi’s comments, that would be ludicrous!

I think he was, whether he meant to or not. It is what he is responding to, as much as his own comment.
And you are right, it IS ridiculous.

People on this forum seem ready to castigate FCBarca for his comments on the Garcia fiasco, when he speaks a lot of sense... The bottom line is that Pep extending makes the prospect of Messi signing, more likely, however you look at it! So Messi’s comments the other night can definitely be viewed to be linked with Pep committing - the two are linked undoubtedly! That isn’t the same as Pep signed an extension based on tentative hope that Messi is intent on leaving Barcelona.

Messi coming being Potentially more likely because of pep's extension, i agree with wholeheartedly. Pep extending because of the chance of messi coming, or having waited this long to extend because he was waiting on messi to hint coming, that i don't. One might be link to the other, but that doesn't mean the two are linked.

imho, if people 'castigate' him, which i don't think they do, it is for his dickish attitude and wild superiority complex (of club more than personal). Speaking for myself, I have responded with the same, at times, politeness, sarcasm, or anger as i have to any other poster here.

Rewind 5 years and he's in his prime, your post is correct. But in the present your post isn't correct.
Remember when we signed George Weah? Relatively speaking this is the same, apart from the money.

If any of our rivals were doing these figures for a near 34 year old, I don't think there would be any blue who would say that particular club is being transformed.

WTF?? :-O

If we sign Messi. And let's say that Aguero still continues for another season. Which surely would be in both of their interest since they are good friends. Where would that leave us with our hunt for an Aguero replacement? I don't see how we could fit in someone like Haaland. If we have Messi, Aguero and Jesus still at the club.

I can see that point was put across pretty badly. I apologise. I am not comparing Messi and Weah as players, that should be clear. I'm comparing the age and the stage of their career when joining our club. I don't see why we are putting those resources into someone who has 2 years left at the top. I also responded to someone who said him signing transforms the club. How? How does it transform us?

Signing one of Haaland or Mpabbe transforms us. For me, 33 year old Messi doesn't transform us. That's what I was trying to say, but I concede it was worded incorrectly for which I apologise for once more.

It takes us to the point where Mbappe is a free agent.

Stage of their career?

Messi is currently the greatest player on the planet, even at 34...or maybe a close second to KDB ;-). Weah was way past his best, and had struggled at Chelsea. I doubt there’s a single top team that wouldn’t take Messi now if they could afford him. The fact Man City were Weah’s choice back then tells you where his stock was at.

In fact, all you’re doing is comparing their age. Nothing more nothing less.

Would you sacrifice getting the striker you want to give kun an extension for a year ?

I could be mistaken but I don't accept that it's an either/or choice. If we have Guardiola and Messi here, Sergio will want to stick around, and Haaland or Mbappe will more likely want to play here.

If I had to bet I'd say we'll go for Messi and Lauturo Martinez.

George Weah and Messi are completely different.
Weah's game was about being explosive over 5-10 yards, something that declines as you get older.
Messi's game isn't about making lung busting runs, he stands still three quarters of the match and then all of a sudden he's done something to change the game.
Weah joined when our midfield couldn't pick a pass or spot a run (as said by Weah at the time), I think the majority of his goals he ground out on his own.
Messi at any club today guarantees you success on and off the pitch, even if we get him for a year the money generated by his presence will probably dwarf any income winning a champions league.

The point of signing Messi is not to transform or develop us.
It’s to make a massive statement of intent and secondarily to reap huge commercial benefits.
Any team able to attract Messi away from Barca is a team able to attract and sign any of the best players in the world.
Add to this the possibility that the current best player in the world may actually improve our chances of winning trophies in the next few years and it’s a no brainier.
It’s a big yes from me.

The difference is that Messi is still one of the best players in the world, if not the best. Weah was way passed it when he signed for us.

Any club except Barcelona these days?

I have never had a city players name on the back of my shirt. Sign Messi & I’m getting it ASAP then I’m framing it.

This signing if it happens will generate enough cash to pay for the messi deal.
It’s a no brainier
