It’s mad how so many still just see Foden as a kid. He’s not, he’s a first teamer and a very important first teamer. When he does come off the bench or starts cup games he’s often either our best player or changes the game. The fact that after this weekend he wouldn’t have started 7 league games on the trot is inexcusable.
He is 20, a regular in a world class side, has started each CL game and will have more appearances this year than last, as he also had last year than before. There is simply nothing to bang on about.

It depends how you view Phil. If you think he's a kid that still is below first teamers and should play cup games for now or you view him as one of the best players that should be picked for league games with the same chance as others regardless of age. I know which camp I'm in, been saying it for probably a year now.

So if you look at the stats for who has played this year, there is no issue here imo.

This includes PL and CL games only, starts and total minutes played:

Ederson (15) (1350)
Rodri (14) (1218)
Raz (13) (1158)
Kyle (12) (1060)
Dias (12) (1060)
Kev (10) (909)
FFS (10) (870)
Cancelo (9) (840)
Phil (8) (789)
Gundog (8) (712)
Bernie (7) (664)
Torres (8) (658)
Gabby (6) (568)
Mendy (6) (509)
Stones (5) (464)
Laporte (5) (437)
Ake (4) (379)

Ok, Injuries play there part in these stats but they have mainly been to defenders and Kun/Gabby and wont really impact on wether Phil is selected or not. He is getting a fair crack of the whip.

We know which camp you are in, yes. He is not below many first-teamers in appearance terms.

In shit games.

4 PL starts in 10, soon to be 11.
0 starts in last 6, soon to be 7.

Dress it up as you want but if that was Kev or Sterling big questions would be being asked.
He isn't Kev or Sterling though. Its pretty clear that from those stats Pep has a go to set of players for his 'best team'

Ederson
Walker
Dias
Rodri
DeBruyne
Mahrez
Sterling
Gabby (only injury has prevented him being a constant pick)

You might not agree with it but it reflects reality. That means there is one slot that Phil is competing for in midfield or a wide slot when Pep decides to rotate wide players. He will get plenty minutes this year.

Again, Phil is long past being a kid that should be grateful for minutes here and there. Saying ‘he will get plenty minutes this year’ means fuck all. If Pep wants to bang on about form you could easily argue Phil has been better than both KDB, with the exception of the last couple of games, and Sterling this season so yes he should be up there with them.

And for as long as Pep thinks Mahrez should start 5/6 league games and Phil 0 I will question it and I’ll question Pep.

That’s your prerogative. Phil has been very good and not so good this season. Like Bernie and Torres who have similar minutes. I don’t agree that Phil has been better than Kev. I‘m not being defensive of the likes of Mahrez either who has had a couple of stinkers.

i thought the discussion was Phil is not getting enough time. The stats show, over this season he is. That he hasn’t started recently is a puzzle. We don’t know what Pep sees in training though. I’m more worried about what is going on with Laporte tbh.

Why do you keep ignoring his starts in the CL? It is absolutely clear that he is now an important member of the squad, as he should be.

He is not yet a seasoned international player with season after season of outstanding performance. I believe he will become that, especially as he is being managed in the right way, in my view. There is a reason why he is becoming such a demand!

Such a demand? For who?

I do include his CL starts but starting in really shit CL games as this season's have been shouldn't mean not starting in 6 league games. There is no reason at all for this to happen with regards to 1- Foden's fitness and form and 2- the form of the players that are playing in front of him.

It was widely agreed that we got one of, if not the easiest CL groups we could. I do wonder if Foden would have seen so many CL minutes had the draw not been so kind to us. At the moment, Pep can point to Phil having played in the CL to bat back any criticism. It will be interesting to see what happens come the business end of the season when every PL and CL game are huge.

But we are talking 6 games in a 70 game season. I will be very surprised if he does not feature in at least half our games and I hope he does. I really rate him, we just have a slight disagreement in how often he is played and who against. If he keeps performing each time he is selected, he becomes impossible to ignore.
