I don’t know what to make of Rodri. I thought he was fucking awful for 12 months but I actually think he is doing ok at the minute.

I have no real issue with the Rodri and Fern partnership because we do look solid in midfield but it does highlight the issues further forward. A midfield three of Fern, Rodri and KDB is far more creative than the Liverpool midfield but their front three, especially the wide two, piss all over ours. If we want to continue with a two containing any of Rodri, Fern and Gundogan, we really need to sort out the wide positions.

That was actually one of his “better” games this season but the static performance as a whole highlighted just how little he offers the side in possession.

Nobody does those little strides forward he takes as if he’s looking for a forward pass enticing the opposition out onto him then immediately chops it back to somebody directly behind him before trotting back to be the last man as well as him.

Pair Fernandinho with Gundogan/Bernardo and we might see a few forward passes in a game.

Yeah I think you play one of Dinho or Rodri, and pair them with a midfielder who can carry it forward like Gundogan (or KdB, maybe Bernardo for energy).

But Pep went defensive today, and both players played fine, they did their roles well.

Not good enough , his first and natural thought is to go backwards every time he gets the ball, which maybe is the job of a defensive midfielder but when you see a truly world class player like Fernandinho in that role who is always looking to go forwards you realise how far behind Rodri is
Maybe unfair comparing Rodri to Dinho , but that is the standard we need , i can only think of Kante at Chelsea near Dinho's level , but we need to scour europe for the next Dinho or maybe give Tommy Doyle some games, that lad looks class and is far more mobile.

not a long term replacement for ferna...his immobility eans he needs another more defenisively minded midfielder next to him and therefore that takes a creative player out of the 11 unless you play KDB deeper as a box to box player.

Would be a very good player in Spain, France or Germany.

Not here sadly. Far too slow and his passing range is limited.

He needs another player with legs beside him which is ridiculous as that takes options away from other areas.

Should be sold in the summer but knowing the club he'll be offered a new contract.

He helped create utd best chances today......one giving it away and then fouling pogba.....second one in the penalty incident that was then overtunred its him missing the challenge in midfield that is the root cause of it.
And because he affects the balance of our midfield as against anyone half decent he cant be trusted to play on his own without Gundogan or Ferna next to him.......
He is an average player in this league and is exposed if Pep plays the way he did in our best seasons.......He is not the future and as another poster put it....we will struggle to win things with him in the team/squad
You missed a misplaced pass in to touch. Then again you missed all the excellent work he did, or ignored it. Turn off the sound and watch the game without preconceived negative thoughts. What a waste of 93 minutes, noting faults to prove your point.

slows us down all the time, never releases the ball quickly, certainly not going forward
Stale cliches, constantly recyled, for likes, false, false and false. Re-watch today's or Wednesday's games for proof bearing in mind another stale cliche "there are none so blind as those that will not see".

His job is to regain and retain possession and let the creative players do their job, cover for them when they go forward, help the defence with clearing headers and long passes out of our box when under pressure all of which he did today. He also passed the ball in all directions, matched £ 100 million Pogba stride for stride when Utd. tried to break down the middle, had a couple of unsuccessful attempts on goal, played a few good through balls through the red defence freeing Raheem & Cancelo to attack the box, on the right side of midfield took a pass on his chest and played a first time volley out to the feet of our player with space wide left, not an easy skill, but one you didn't see or appreciate. You say " highlighted just how little he offers the side in possession" without expanding on what you saw to highlight that for you or balance you post by referring to anything that highlights what he does offer the team. You highlight "little strides" he makes as a put down, but don't note that he doesn't panic under pressure, but chooses passes carefully rather than surrender possession, important skill for a CM. Regarding trotting around, a guy who "trotted" 46.9 km in 362 minutes in 5 CL games with 92% pass accuracy, Look at his stats for this season, just under 10k per game in a team that spends a lot of time camped in front of a defensive wall, 92% pass completion and look at all those possession stats, possession regained 96 ,recoveries in 11 PL games. If you consider Rodri immobile and suggest 35 year old Ferna and Gundo ( not exacylt Boult doubles) as a more mobile pairing alternative you are too late we will be lucky if we see any passes.

no, bollocks, he offers nothing to this team

I dont note points to prove a point - they are just there. Rodri slows our game down and the fact that Pep is playing someone alongside him (Ferna or Gundogan) means that Pep thinks he cant do it on his own - I just happen to agree with Pep - he cant. He isnt mobile enough. He retains the ball well when he has it and completes lots of passes and reads the game well but he also makes mistakes quite regulalry - that misplaced pass (no pressure on him) isnt the first time he has done that.
He is a good player but not what we need if we are going to play more attacking football..having to play a second more defensive midffielder next to him reduces our creativity

Either play him as the sole defensive midfielder or bin him
If he needs a double pivot to protect him then he is the wrong man for the role
We are playing one less creative player to get him in the team
And it’s not like accommodating him seems to have any positive effect anyway
Bin him is the only solution he’s not nearly good enough. I don’t even think he’s a good squad player. We won’t win anything if Pep perseveres with him game after game.

Totally agree. Need a box to box next to him not another recycler..
