Yeah, it's a difficult balancing act. Simply shutting the schools isn't a viable option though. These kids have already missed too much of their education, and it'd be very difficult for parents who aren't working from home as someone else mentioned.

It’s all just a juggling act I’m definitely on the lucky side, retired and with my daughter out of education.

I have got everything in for xmas and will be hunkering down with the wife watching netflix and other TV stuff, it's going to be a shut-in and that's without government advice.

I think it's more a tactic to get people to stay indoors, a bit of scaremongering on top of upping the tier.

Again though the messaging is shit. I work in what will be tier 3 area from Wednesday, yet I live in a tier 2 area, and my tier 2 area has a higher rate than the tier 3 area.

If it stops Oxford Street being full to bursting (as it was at times this weekend), it's not a bad idea imho.

Well he wasn't arsed enough to mention any of the other thousands of strains, but he did for the timing of this one interestingly enough. Let the scientists look into it and explain it, not just drop a big yellow ticker headline.

Scaremongering is a method only doomed for failure. In all likelihood most won't be affected and their reaction after realising it didn't affect them personally will be 'they're lying, again, to scare us' - once again eroding compliance. You have to keep adding further scare tactics to make it work, and then they fail inevitably and it all unravels.

Im sure the scientists will expand, but maybe (thinking allowed), he feels this particular variant is different to those previously and hence worthy of note
