So flights to Holland, Belgium,Italy, Austria and soon Germany and France all suspended from the U.K. are flights and travel between those countries also cancelled or are we to believe this new strain is solely in the U.K. ??

Eleven cases of new Covid-19 strain reported outside UK - WHO

The World Health Organization has called on its members in Europe to strengthen measures against coronavirus in response to the new variant circulating in the UK, its European branch told AFP.
Nine cases of the new strain have been reported in Denmark, one in the Netherlands and another in Australia, according to the WHO.
“Across Europe, where transmission is intense and widespread, countries need to redouble their control and prevention approaches,” a spokeswoman for WHO Europe said.

The regional scoreboard today. Everywhere up but only Yorkshire and the North East are really keeping a lid on this

It is clearly heading north as the Midlands had a big rise today too. And whilst NW is not a big rise it is going up more than the other northern regions.

We may well already be seeing the arrival of the mutant strain in numbers that will decimate the region before anything is done about it.

We really should be in lockdown now. This is clearly very serious indeed.

But dither and delay are the usual thing and who cares about the North West down there anyway.

We should have done the same in March.

You northerners should get that chip of your shoulders , we are all in this together . Miss management everywhere

SCOREBOARD

EAST 4646 - up from 3521

SOUTH EAST 7120 - up from 4766

LONDON 11, 577 - up from 6931

So these three regions have 23, 343 of today's 35K cases in the UK - up from 15, 218

Picking up on a point you raised yesterday about approval of the one shot/one shot Pfizer vaccine. It'll be interesting to see if this dosage with 62% efficacy could and should have been approved earlier rather than waiting for the possible higher 92% efficacy dosage because we could have been in serious roll out of this lower rate vaccine by now.
Maybe this judgement could be a bit retrospective but we'll see.

Woah!!! We "northerners" have no chip on our shoulders.
We clearly weren't all in this together when we were put in tier 3 and our hospitality sector were expected to live off less than the South. And then it suddenly changed again.
We've had shit loads of stuff to put up with for 40 years now, and there was a reason Johnson kept quoting "levelling up" in the GE. Not that I voted for the twats I hasten to add.

Other regions

MIDLANDS 2448 - up from 1740)

NORTH EAST 586 - up from 531

YORKSHIRE/HUMBER 1141 - up from 1114

And NORTH WEST 1945 - up from 1703

The pandemic is very much a southern england thing. For now. But it will not be for long if we do not get a grip.

Ha sorry , i do keep reading the south dont care about the north , i dont think that is really true . Burnham didnt get the best deal for you in hindsight

Great to see we now have 400 vaccine centres. Was 100 a week ago and we could pass half a million vaccines allready this weekend. Firm decisive action taken once the scientists updated on this new strain Friday. Just seen a poll that the vast majority (in the 70 percents) support the action. Vast majority of people I speak to are quite pragmatic and can handle a quiet Xmas until things improve in spring. It’s been shit but light most definitely at the end of this tunnel.

If I understood something I heard on this on TV somewhere involving a scientist. They were so sure the efficacy was good and that protection after just one dose better and that nobody was even getting sick enough to go into hospital even if they did catch it - things less true of the more successful vaccines - that they did lots of new tests on this in exchange for accepting the inevitable delay.

And these tests were even better than they had hoped.

This might be nonsense or one person bluffing up the Oxford vaccine.

But if it is true you can understand why they would accept a delay if it is that good.

Far as I am aware it is the 2 full doses up for approval more trials required to vary dosage.

Unless new data on this variant is expected in the next 48 hours which will inform the way forward, decisive action is needed right now, nationwide.

Those R numbers are high enough to overwhelm the health service in a matter of days to short number of weeks. Every day counts - how many times do we need to learn the lesson that delaying never helps?

There's no way this variant is confined to the South East.

We can always relax later if the early estimates are pessimistic.

We are all in this together, you're right.
It hasn't always been like that though. I'm going to digress a little here....do you remember when southern fans used to show wads of money to fans in the North in the early 80s?
If we have a "chip on our shoulder" then it's merited...and some southerners put it there.
And Burnham was right IMO. He worked in London for many years and saw that whole shitshow a couple of months ago for what it was....a blatant slap on the wrist for being "uppity northerners "

I think the full dataset has been submitted, and the sense I have is that oxford/az believe the lower dose should be approved.

The regulator will make the call, but they are able to make a conditional approval of the lower dose subject to the confirmation later.

The new strain, which is up to 70% more transmissible, has been found in every part of the UK except Northern Ireland, an expert has told Sky News.

Dr Yvonne Doyle, medical director at Public Health England, said the "sharp and sudden increase" in new cases on Sunday was of "serious concern".

"Most of the new cases reported today are concentrated in London and the South East, although it is too early to tell if this is linked to the new variant," she said.

"What we do know is that the way to control this virus is the same, whatever the variant. It simply will not spread if we avoid close contact with others

"Wash your hands, wear a mask, keep your distance from others, and reduce your social contacts.

"By working together we have tackled this virus before. By holding the line over the next few weeks, it is possible we can do so again, as we continue to roll out the vaccine to the most vulnerable."
