#7 | Raheem Sterling - 2020/21 Performances

His performances regarding missing chances have been poor for some time and probably weigh on his mind when one on one with the keeper.
Unfortunately for us he seems to have more one on ones than any of our other players.
No doubt he works hard but some improvement in this respect seems to be elusive and his wages are very high. A Stone's like recovery is needed and fast.

I mentioned way earlier in this thread that Sterling's more of a "wing-forward" than a classic "winger". Similar in the mold of Son Heung-Min, Rashford, Werner (when he's not busy being shite on the wings), Aubameyang (under Arteta last season) etc.

He's very much that sort of player, you could throw Grealish into that same pot too,a player i believe would do a far better job for us.

I just think he's hugely overrated. That said Pep knows best and he seems to want to start him every game so what do I know???

But from my perspective, on the plus side, he works hard, makes decent runs and rarely gets injured. On the negative side, his first touch is woeful, he has zero footballing brain and constantly makes the wrong pass / choices (just look at his assist stats) and shits himself in front of goal, reliably. When he's through on goal instead of me thinking great we could score here, I find myself thinking "how will he fuck this one up".

I would lose no sleep if he was benched for a few weeks.

Really sums up Sterling. Sterling will probably be one of those players that will always have splitting views about his performances.

Sterling's main weapons are his intelligence and off-the-ball running, his ability to find and time his runs into open areas are nothing short of world class. The huge contrast lies in his footballing technique, his dribbling, his finishing, which are pretty far from world class.

Regardless of what you think of Sterling's quality, it's obvious the type of player he is, is crucial in Pep's system.

IMO, I think Sterling did well enough against Chelsea, but as per usual, I expect another poster to disagree with me.
He did brilliant and then he did bad. Overall his contribution was positive, which I think is the picture more often than not.

He has the pace and workrate to pull teams apart but doesnt have the abilty or footballing IQ to finish them.

Honestly... (It's unlikely) I'd offload him in the summer whilst his stock is still high and invest it in going all out to get Aguero's replacement.

A similar player who can score 1v1 and much more difficult.

as much as you can say Sterling did good things today there was rarely any end product maybe just once pass to Ken he got right.

he actually messed up basic 5 yard passes a few times and lost possession. He ran with the ball a few times and got the foul but apart from that you are never convinced he will set someone up consistentry.

Funny you post this after Sancho missed an open net in the same game. Maybe don't just rely on internet compilations for your information.

The absolute state of this thread after possibly the best performance of the season by the team in which everyone including him played their part in yet you would think he scored an own goal in a game the team lost looking in here. Barring that 1 on 1 he fluffed he was a constant threat, picking up the ball in pockets and driving forward, always an outlet whenever the team was in transition from defence to attack and gave chilwell a particularly torrid time so much so a player who is a big part of how they attack rarely got past the half way line.

I mean there have been some shocking takes on him as a player lately but him having no football IQ has to be high up there.

It’s unbelievable isn’t it, one poster saying get rid! He has not had the best start to the season, but he is one player that we have that can cause any team issues even if he is not playing well, and that’s because of his pace. How many goals did he provide last season? 30? Yeah let’s get rid... some right wankers on here

Trouble is its often the big moments in big games where he messes up. That will always separate him from world class players. To be fair his head doesn't drop but if only he could have a clinical streak.

Best performance by Raheem for a long time and whilst he missed the chance to score when through on goal we did score from that attack. For the first time in a long time he wanted to attack players rather than pass backwards and sideways. Wonder if the 'expert' commentators have worked out yet why he played on the right!

And that,in a nutshell,is the reason he'll never be top class. He isn't a poor player, thats ridiculous....but he doesn't influence games as he should,he's inconsistent and lacks the ability to boss or take a game by the scruff and dictate play.I have nothing against the fella other than i think we can find better.

Its odd that some contributors (i wont resort to insult.....) cannot display any objectivity and believe he is untouchable where criticism is concerned.

Actually, I'd disagree Grealish is in the same mold. Grealish is more of a creator than a scorer, kinda wide playmaker, sometimes playing straight from the no.10 position. To draw similarities, I'd say Grealish is closer to Mahrez/Bernardo.

Sterling's role is more to poach and take advantage of the spaces left behind by our drifting/withdrawn strikers.

Played well yesterday. Faded 2nd half but looked more of a fitness issue to me. We put a lot in to that 1st half and it worked.

He'll never be a natural goalscorer when he has time to think about it. But he adds so much more to our game than that. It's also the reason we desperately need a clinical forward in the next window because Sterling is a square plug when he is put up there.
