Colin Bell RIP - Ian Cheeseman interview with Jon Bell (P142)

Don’t know if any older blues remember it but at the time of the 1970 World Cup one of the petrol companies gave away little metal figurines of the England squad. When I was a kid one of my treasures was the miniature Colin Bell.

(I also had the Gordon Banks, but that wasn’t the one I treasured.)
Esso.

Perhaps it is just the emotion that I am feeling but I genuinely feel that we will give Utd, (I was going to say the rags but The King would never have lowered himself to my childish standards) a complete shoeing in honour of the greatest inside forward we have ever seen.
I have lost family members and not shed as many tears as I have tonight.
God bless you Colin and thankyou.
Thouhts and prayers to his family and friends.

Interesting you should say that. When normally chatting to my brother it's rags this, rags that.

I text him this morning about the game tonight, and a reference to Colin. I couldn't bring myself to use the word rags - it was simply United.

Common belief is that Italy were still drained after their 4-3 extra time semi final win v West Germany but couldn't imagine anyone beating that Brazil team.
Fair play, that is a good point. But yeah, in all honestly I think Brazil would have beat England in the knockout stage.

Wow, just watched the highlights of England vs West Germany, many years since I’ve watched that, and many things that I had forgotten.
Among other things, it’s striking how much the crowd hate us. They really hate us (they couldn’t have all been Germans).
The first goal, as I’ve already said, is clownish by Bonetti. The second, he’s definitely at fault, neither coming clearly for the ball, nor staying on his line, but caught in no man’s land. The third, to be fair, he’s left high and dry by his defence.
But the foul on Bell!! He’s simply cleaned out! The defender doesn’t appear to get any kind of touch on the ball. He simply takes Colin out. One of the clearest penalties I’ve seen in international football. The ref is Argentinian. I’ve seen documentaries on the England-Argentina game in 66, and the Argentinians, to this day (along with many other South Americans) are convinced that the ref was simply giving the game to England. And again, to be fair, highlights I’ve seen seem to make it clear they’ve got a point.
Maybe this was revenge by the ref. Looks like it to me, anyway.

Don't worry. Normal service will be resumed presently, but for a short time at least, The King will make us both better people.

No, I watched him in an old Derby game yesterday getting a booking. He threw the ball down and gave the ref a load of verbals. I've included the game here so you can see that the rags got the benefit of bent refs at least as far back as 1972.

Thanks for putting this up mate, thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, we totally outplayed them that day and once again the King showed his class.. Wish we could have Willie Donachie at left back in our current team, fuck all got past him and he could play too..

I’m pretty sure United will mark the occasion. I’d expect them to, anyway. Remember our impeccable behaviour at the Munich memorial derby.
(Helps that we won, too. ;-). It’s all very well being respectful, but once the whistle goes, it’s all out war against that lot).
Nothing would surprise me with the scum bags, I’ll be surprised if they do anything apart from observe a minutes silence but fair fucks if they do.

They hate us that much that their yank owners conspire with Liverpool and Arsenal against us non-stop.

Amazing footage this. Bell looked like Yaya,De Bruyne, Silva all morphed into one. Look at the stadium also how packed it is wow. Jealous of anyone who lived through this era and went to these games

I honestly believe we'd have a couple of European Cups and a couple more titles in our cabinet if his body had allowed him to continue. I grew up watching all the stuff from that era. I still pop back in and I'm blown away how good that man was at football. He deserves a heroes send off, by us, and the club, and he'll bloody well get it.

I think for younger fans like myself, it's hard to comprehend how much Colin Bell meant to the club. I've never seen fans of other clubs eulogise about a City player like this though. So many people saying he was their favourite player outside of the club they supported.

RIP Colin Bell. Legend.

Thank you to the guys who posted that Match of the 70s with Bell Lee and Summerbee. Absolutely magical. The way we stroked the balls around in literal quagmires just astonishing!

In the early to mid 70s I'd hang round my big brother as he played with the next door neighbour's son Robin. They were both City mad and the name they spoke most was Bell or King Col. Me I was too busy playing with my Action Man!

In the video Colin comes across as the most likeable humble self deprecating guy you'll ever meet.

I thought he would be willowy in style using his skill to ride caveman challenges. He did but he was also tough as an ox and had pace! And his thunderbolts especially that one against Chelsea. Buzzer talked about Colin being most like KdB but I think he was the best parts of Merlin Raz Dinho and Don Sergio with a touch of Phil!

Never be forgotten even after retiring over 40 years ago. I believe Tony Book was close to Colin and my sincere best wishes go out to him and the City family.
