696 care home outbreaks this week still in England.

The N Ireland numbers over Christmas have risen too - nearly doubled since the week before Christmas and at 133 is at the highest since I have been tracking it.

THESE are where the big rises in cases leading to deaths seem to be occurring and why we will likely be at or above 1000 deaths again today.

Until these outbreaks are reduced as they were before Christmas we will have major losses.

I am wondering how many people met their older relatives over Christmas when restrictions were lowered and those are now reaping the whirlwind.

We just did nowhere near enough to target messaging about risk to the different generations.

I have been saying in here for months about the need to do target age messaging on TV via generational icons.

We have been utterly dreadful at this and it is a huge reason why we are struggling.

Confused, constantly changing messaging over rules that might differ if you walk from one side of the street to the other and dashed off with politico buzz words has left confusion - no real awareness from generation to generation what is different about the things they need to do and why.

It is so terribly handled that people long since gave up trying to fathom it out and just do what they think is right for their lives.

Countries with a unified system - not a 4 nation often different if you go to the nearest border town to shop strategy - have fared far better.

Clarity is your number one weapon and a belief everyone is in it together and sharing in the fight is number 2.

Both of these in England especially have been so bad many people just think they are being spoon fed propaganda even if they actually are not.

Messaging was our most important test and we are currently well on target for an F.

Popped into my workplace office block at lunchtime to get stuff to work from home and pick up post.

First lockdown it was empty.

Today, as busy as it is on any normal day, full of people mingling in communal areas.

Also noticed the roads are no different than any other time.

This will go on longer than March as no one appears to be listening to the current restrictions.

My Grandads care home has had a big Covid outbreak, they've been brilliant all through this pandemic so it's upsetting this has happened.

I said the same yesterday. Streets were busy with people when I got off the bus after work. Work was busier than last year too. In the first lockdown when I had to go into work, there were the odd people in, yesterday about a third of all staff were in.

Everybody knows there is no enforcement. First lockdown march-june working from home worked fine. Now its "Not possible"

Same with everything else, wearing masks, house parties, driving to other counties for a walk, going abroad for "essential travel" yet no marks on instagram putting up pictures of the pool in Dubai, if there is no punishment there is no deterrent.

Yeah been alot of social media influencers spending weeks in dubai.

Very annoying

Johnson has only now decided to use the Army to help roll out the vaccine? It was obvious to many on here that this was likely to be needed, hes just making it up as he goes along.

They clearly had few viable plans in place to vaccinate millions, yet they have known for months this day was coming. Shambolic!
Not necessarily. Its more a case of getting the NHS / PHE / DHSC to do what they can and then supplement it with army logistics.
That said the army should have been put in charge of team comms and logistics from day one.I said wouldn't work well the management of our beuaracracy is incompetent.

I agree entirely, which means they hadnt anticipated the problems or planned according to my mind.

But Johnson is a politician so like the rest he wont say look weve made a mistake. He will just avoid the question.

That said the only time i have seen a politician say they had made a mistake over Covid was Sturgeon about care homes. So fair play to her for that.

The England hospital deaths in past week allocated to the actual day of death is starting to show the consequences of those worryingly fast rising ventilator numbers I have been posting in recent days.

These are the last 3 weeks by date and number of England hospital deaths on the ACTUAL day. They paint a very disturbing upward track.

2 Jan 408 This is the first 5 day total over 400 (wk to wk before 5 day totals were 354 v 267 v 261 v 224)

3 Jan 391 (at 4 days only) Highest 4 day total since 22 April (two weeks after wave 1 peak)

4 Jan 426 (at 3 days only) Highest 3 day total since 20 April (ten days after wave 1 peak)

5 Jan 347 (at two days only) Highest 2 day total 22 April.

6 Jan (yesterday) is at 88 after just 1 day. This is the highest day one number since 24 April.

We are going to have 500 on the day England hospital days soon and unless we turn things round soon it may not stop there.

We reached 800 + a few days at the peak of wave 1 in April for context. Were we not saving many more lives now we would be past there already

Because hospital numbers are already in many places well above the wave 1 peak. So if these keep rising even with a lower death rate we are heading up towards matching those numbers day by day.

Hopefully the vaccine plus lockdown will slow that down but it is likely a week or two yet before we see that and this new variant is very much more infective than the one we had in April.

Recall these are England only and hospital only - so around a half to two thirds of the daily reported deaths.
