He can be impeached and “removed” even after he’s left office which would prevent him ever running for a federal office again.

Trump has been a full on disaster for the GOP. And there is no sign of him going away. This is the last chance for them (establishment Reps) to kill him off. Yes its bad for the relations with the base but you could have some who want to run themselves in 2024 and they know if they can exclude Trump now at this point then that is half the battle won. The whole MAGA base will go nuts and many will want to disown the GOP. That works as well as Ivanka and Jnr etc would have to plead with the base to get back involved and back them as Rep candidiates - but why would they when the GOP turned on Trump in the end. And a new MAGA party has zero chance. It would be a shit show from start to finish.

It makes a lot of sense for Establishment GOP to vote to convict right now - its a now or never chance to remove the cancer. Yes they would weaken themselves but longer term it really helps them move on.
 
George Conway tweeting they've got the numbers for a vote. Just needs Moscow Mitch to go straight for it rather than debate.

I agree that is what they should do, I'm just not convinced that they will do.
