I don't understand why Whitty is the face of the campaign to get people to change their behaviour. Why not Boris, or the popular JVT?
Lol. Don’t think Boris would be the ideal face for the campaign, however JVT wouldn’t have been a bad shout.

That's lateral flow, not PCR.
The current rate of operational false-positive swab tests in the UK is unknown; preliminary estimates show it could be somewhere between 0·8% and 4·0%.2, 6 This rate could translate into a significant proportion of false-positive results daily due to the current low prevalence of the virus in the UK population, adversely affecting the positive predictive value of the test.2 Considering that the UK National Health Service employs 1·1 million health-care workers, many of whom have been exposed to COVID-19 at the peak of the first wave, the potential disruption to health and social services due to false positives could be considerable.

It's a safe bet there's a large amount of non-commercial traffic in those areas. That surely can be targetted immediately.

I still maintain that Boris blew the unspoken commitment of many socially aware and consciencious people with the abrupt pre-Christmas u-turn. And performed the same trick again at the start of the new year Schools.

Then he blew the opportunity to engage people fully on the lockdown by making the briefings and the discussion about the distribution of Vaccines. The public become focused on something they really can't affect in any realistic manner, instead of the urgent need for everyone need to modify behaviour. You can go back in this thread and see this in action.

His third briefing, where he sent a much stronger message on compliance, was too little too late. You have to put the important message you need in people's minds up front. That's basic communications. What Boris did was put his target, his ambition up front. It's a mistake made by a narcissist. Any number of politicians might have made it - Boris is guaranteed to.

The media are as much to blame. There was a daily mail smear article on JVT this week about him having an Indian meal on around March 16th the same day Boris did a press conference with no distancing and journalists present but Boris encouraged Londoners to stop going to restaurants or suggested it. JVT ate alone half way through a long shift from 6am until late or something stupidly long.

in terms of compliance, I’m not sure what those that suggest some harsher crackdown on traffic etc propose to deal with it. Are there an additional 100,000 police officers out there that we can recruit overnight? It’s just not possible. And the police targeting people sat alone on a bench given their resources is a complete waste. It gives the impression they are going for the easy way out.

I think everyone agrees the biggest issue is mixed messaging and high profile cover ups. For example, it’s amusing seeing Hancock state this morning (when asked about those police officers who went beyond their powers incorrectly and which they have now backed down from) that he fully supports the police in cracking down. Everyone watching will have seen his tweet and the rest of cabinets tweets backing Cummings and saying how right he was to do what he did.

again with schools. Any idiot could see they were going to close them. Opening for one day was ludicrous. In addition, the ability for all to plan by announcing it a week or so before would have helped

Obviously not relevant at current prevalence, and the false positive numbers are clearly not correct now either - see easier link.
My daughters place has had 3 in the last fortnight. One of which was a resident in their 90s.
That's added to the previous two a few weeks back.
Two or more positive tests is classed as an outbreak, I believe. If so they're on their second outbreak with no one showing any symptoms whatsoever.

Mail on Sunday saying May bank holiday before the pubs are open

compliance will be in the toilet by then

Isn't that the case in a lot of places though, particularly the UK? I know we're up shit creek but it's mad how Ireland can somehow be so much even worse off (at this stage) in terms of numbers per population.
We did so well first time round, we were more open to it. Best explanation I can give

England records a further 508 COVID deaths

It brings the total number of confirmed deaths reported in hospitals to 55,580, NHS England said on Sunday.

The deaths were between 17 December and 9 January.

Weekend numbers

All those deaths is really difficult for the staff to take , spare them a thought

Wales records another 1,660 positive COVID cases and 45 more deaths

Sunday's figures take the total number of confirmed cases in Wales to 169,754.

The total number of fatalities since the start of the pandemic now stands at 3,964.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist said it is "sobering" to see the impact COVID-19 has had on health service workers across London.

He added: "But we are proud to be able to offer support to the London Ambulance Service at this critical time. At the heart of policing is the drive to save lives and keep people safe and I know officers volunteering to support the LAS will do so with pride and upmost professionalism.

"The Met has a long history of supporting our blue light colleagues across the city, responding to some of London's most challenging incidents.

"This partnership will see the Met provide 75 officers taken from a range of commands to drive ambulances to incidents across the capital

Wonder if they're using lateral flow tests?

So it looks like when the out of hospital deaths are added we are going to be looking at maybe 600 - 700 deaths. Absolutley huge numbers for a Sunday.

To complete the UK data I started during half time

Northern Ireland

17 deaths - up from 6 last Sunday

1112 cases - down from 1662 last Sunday.

At 31.2% positive

573 deaths without England out of hospital (often next to none on Sunday so total almost certainly will look lower than it is today compared with recently though the England hospital data is well up on past Sundays)

Big catch ups Tuesday / Wednesday
