Political relations between UK-EU

Always thought it wouldn’t happen in my lifetime, but if Scotland went first, then who knows.

Anyway, whatever form a new 32 county state would have, I hope a lot more thought goes into it’s development than went into NI’s current status in the UK.

If the UK still exists then ballot stations would be blown up if there was ever an attempt at an independence vote.

The best situation is the GFA, it’s the only way in which 100’s (at least), won’t be killed.

Of course the GFA is the only way. What else are we talking about.

The real work would be developing a state that satisfies everyone’s ideals North and South, Nationalist and Unionists. No sweat.

Now some conspiracy theorists would suggest that the elimination of oranges from the shops, is just a start.

I wouldn’t look too much into the oranges.

Not a high bar. Three blokes spending an afternoon discussing it down the pub would comfortably exceed the hours that went into discussing NI and it’s current semi-detached state within the UK.

I didn’t go looking for this, it found its way to me but the answer to your question seems to be that touring musicians have always enjoyed visa free access to many countries until now and it is the UK government’s decision to end that relationship with the EU. Does seem on the face of it to be petty and pointless but like the scrapping of the Erasmus scheme there is the usual apparent promise of something bigger and better which I suspect we will never see

I guess there may be 2 sides to the story?

Brexit: UK Government denies reports it rejected offer of visa-free EU tours by musicians | HeraldScotland

The original came from - "Citing an EU source close to negotiations, the Independent reported that a “standard” proposal to exempt performers for 90 days was turned down by the UK.........."

Perhaps not the most trustworthy source.....?

"However, a Government spokesperson has described the reports as “misleading speculation”.

They said: “The UK pushed for a more ambitious agreement with the EU on the temporary movement of business travellers, which would have covered musicians and others, but our proposals were rejected by the EU.”

Equally - possibly not a fully reliable source - but there does seem to be a preoccupation on here to look for the worst.

Now as a Leave supporter that is still feeling very happy with the outcome, I do take a bit of comfort that as we approach mid-January all we seem to be getting is bits and pieces of discomfort stories - and still that apocalypse is being a bit shy

And yes - proper planning and management of Brexit would have identified this visa issue and ensured that it was sorted before go-live

May, Robbins and Hammond (Remainers) have so much to be responsible for.

Always more than one side to every story. Can you see any logic in looking for an arrangement that lumps business travellers in with musicians? Do business travellers do multi venue tours? I suspect not

Mark my words, inside the next decade
It won’t happen.

Think about it. NI Parliament would have to vote for it - they won’t. UK parliament will have to ratify it - they won’t. The NI public would have to vote for it - they won’t.

Secretary of state calls it not parliament. The Tories want shot of the north and they'll call it, the day they do is the day it carries a majority in the north.

I honestly don’t believe they do.

No PM wants to be known as the man/woman who lost the Union, it’s why the Scottish vote will be kicked into the long grass for a while too.

I am most certainly not suggesting one side or the other is 'more truthful'

If I had to guess - I would come down on the side of the UK getting it wrong. I am not sure about it being ideology driven though - as you know from my previous posts - I just think that there is a whole lot of incompetence and bad management.

Johnson already put a border in the middle of the UK, he'll go for the easiest option available

Looks like for reasons that are hard to fathom the government asked for something illogical and probably unreasonable, the musicians are collateral damage
