Political relations between UK-EU

Listened to James O’Brien whilst rowing. He had quite a few fishermen and other small business owners recounting their experience of the last two weeks. Many said they are a week or two away from losing their business if things don’t get easier. Red tape, customs fees, other charges, delays at the border. Some things may improve, others are permanent. He even had a few of the hard of thinking on telling him to stop talking about it as it’s all done. He came up with quite a pithy phrase for one. ‘First time I have ever heard of a loser gloating’ . Yes , he was accused of that.
I love his show, you can learn so much from it and as a man I believe him to be sincere and full of empathy.

What I wish he would do though is stop blaming BREXIT for all the ills and start blaming the idiots who have messed it up. He does that to a degree, but always in the wrong context.

Perhaps if you paid less attention to Mr O’Brien and more attention to you significant other there would be less rowing...

Tune in for more relationship advice later.

She is on the treadmill next to me. We don't argue - too busy cursing apple ipods. Bloody things.

I will appreciate any advice about those b*stards.

No, it’s a flawed policy and unfit for purpose. It’s not the 1970s anymore. Living in the past isn’t an option.
Of course it is flawed, the proponents in charge have made it flawed.

Ideologically though it is sound, if you want to escape Neo-Liberalism then the only choice was to leave, it just so happened that because of attitudes such as that belongs in the 1970s the party of more Neo-Liberalism is now in the driving seat.

That is your choice Bob, the politics inspired by Hayek and the laissez faire right. You preferred a future of Conservative Libertarianism, I want a future of Socialism.

You will never shift his view of that. He has a pretty clear view of the political and social drivers that have caused Brexit though. I know some on here hate him with a passion but I like his intelligence and his logical thought processes. He has his heart in the right place but I do chuckle when he is being empathetic. His voice changes. Watch out for it next time :-)

I have yet to hear a Brexit voter lay even a paper cut on his logic.

Lots of people hate him from both sides of the political divide, I think he is the best talk show host around.

You can find compilations of him on you tube done by Iamincorrigble (moron of the week) that make great listening whether you agree with him or not, because he is very good at what he does.

Whoops...

Two takeaways from that. The government knew the figures while they negotiated the “deal” and they are lying through their teeth : A spokesperson said: “The deal will help unlock investment and protect high-value jobs right across the UK, from financial services through to car manufacturing. And we will now take full advantage of the fantastic opportunities available to us as an independent trading nation, striking trade deals with other partners around the world.”

Meat as well as fish exports hit

Nick Allen, chief executive of the British Meat Processor Association, said: "Fundamentally, this is not a system that was designed for a 24/7, just-in-time supply chain.

"The export health certification process was designed for moving containers of frozen meat around the world where you have a bit of leeway on time.
"No matter how much better we get at filling in the forms, it's really not fit for purpose. This is going back to the dark ages in terms of a process really, in this digital age."

Much as we are awash with the problems of UK fish and meat exporters, most of it is down to leaving the EU Single Market and Customs Union, which there was plenty of warnings about beforehand and as neither industry or any industry pushed to remain in either the SM and CU, they kind of made their bed and all that.

Varadkar is right in what he has said to the Irish haulage industry also joining in on complaints...that there is no fix, no magic bullets. It’s a consequence of the UK leaving the SM and CU. Just got to knuckle under and adapt, or find alternative supply chains. “There’s no workaround". @FT

Apart for crawling back asking to rejoin the sm, cu. Question is only how long can the government resist, or the next government.

Trade takes the easiest route to markets.

‘Up to 40% of fish sold at a Danish auction so far this year are believed to have come from Scottish boats circumventing UK disruption. Industry figures fear it might be the start of a permanent shift, not just a temporary work around’

Esbjerg have already built a new terminal and increased capacity by 50% to accomodate the expected increase in happy British fish being landed. But they somehow got wind of Brexit happening a few years ago.

You are still blaming Brexit rather than the Government who has made a mess of Brexit.

It really is no wonder the Tories keep getting elected, you are letting them off the hook and blaming the people who voted in good faith.

If you understand anything about business and trade it was obvious Brexit could never be anything but an eye-wateringly expensive mess. Where I agree with you is that the current government have made an even bigger mess of it that it could be, but the reason is, the tories who could have at least made a reasonable attempt to mitigate the damage were all either hounded out or left the Conservative party between 2017-19. Every single sensible Tory was anti-Brexit, and that’s the problem.

The main reason they keep getting elected is that Labour keep electing shit leaders.

The other problem would have been to make it as smooth as possible they would have had to spend a fortune on preparing properly and educating everyone about all the additional overhead rather than the half arsed rush job at the end, and more people might have cottoned on to the real costs ahead of the 2019 election. Even if they’d prepared properly it still would have been shit but not quite as bad.

Brexit was a shit idea made worse than it needed to be by an idiotic government, it isn’t letting them off the hook.

Okay, I’ll explain it again, these issues are structural, they are caused by the UK leaving the EU Single Market and Customs Union, ie Brexit.

Some of these issues can be better managed, but you cannot eliminate them. We now operate a separate legal and regulatory area, rather than a under a shared one. This creates, trade, regulatory and legal barriers which are causing these issues.

Brexit is the problem, the incompetence is just an optional extra.
