So, is half the current rate of ICU occupancy OK?

Is it going back up to current levels as the disease surges through younger age groups OK?

Obviously, I think a resounding "no" on both counts. Personally, I don't fancy it, and society-wide it sounds terrible.

My doctor mate at Manchester Royal told me a few months back that it actually takes seven staff to maintain one intensive care bed.

Even legislating for older people not being admitted, the virus can't be allowed to rip through the younger age groups, the strain on the NHS would remain the same.

They would still need to somehow pick up the strain and bandwidth on all the other areas of the service which are sadly being neglected at present.

I needed a hospital bed last month, looking around, most people around me were late 30s to early 50s.

Agreed, and that works across all countries when it comes to holidays.

The arrogance of some of the reporting in this country around holidays abroad this year, is surely typical Little Englander?

It will not be our choice to make.

Other countries around the world will be at different stages of their own vaccine programme, so it is pretty arrogant thinking for some outlets to suggest Gary and Sharon can have their two weeks in Marbs this summer, just because they have had their jab?

They are just as likely to remain potential carriers of the virus and still be able to transmit it to others (those not fortunate enough to have had a jab yet)

Equating risk can't be a personal choice, sadly, not in these times.

This is a global challenge and the laws have to be considered for the greater good.

If that means a week in Devon rather than Spain, then people have to accept that.

I have been genuinely shocked how many people assume this vaccine is the white Knight on a fiery steed.
Already booked my weekend in Devon for august instead of looking abroad. Have a weekend in Amsterdam booked for end of October but if we can’t go on that we can’t go. More should be holidaying in the U.K. this year, our economy could do with it.

That's a great outlook to have mate.

As you say, this country needs its people to be responsible, and spend their cash at home more than ever.

I am hopeful of going up to Scotland again in August and seeing some family and creating our own little bubble.

If Nicola decides to let us in...

When did we decide vaccines don't reduce ability to transmit the virus by the way?

Last I heard in December the Oxford trials had shown greatly reduced ability to transmit the virus and Pfizer and Moderna were conducting trials with the results pending?

Did I miss a big study coming out on mucosal immunity or are people just taking the "assume the worst until proven otherwise" approach?

my bro in law (nhs worker) who has already had covid last year, has had the first jab, has again tested positive.

Fingers crossed he's okay. If you don't mind me asking, when did he first have covid and how serious did he have it originally mate?

no conclusive evidence base for either, at the moment

You might well cringe but the country will be opened up when those over 70's are vaccinated.

The first 5 groups account for 94-99% of deaths, and there's just no way the country is going to still be in lockdown when deaths are down to 10-20 a day.

We will be in Tier 1/2, maybe 3 within a month of them hitting that target group.
Totally agree with that statement but dont agree it will be those numbers after the first 4 groups are vaccinated

There's no *conclusive* evidence yet.

There is an evidence base for reduced transmission, The Moderna and Oxford trials both showed a decrease in nasal swab positives among the vaccinated group which suggests mucosal immunity (and that means not being able to carry it).

We need more extensive trials to prove that to be the case, which is happening, but to say there's no evidence for it's not right.

yes, far from conclusive but emerging, bad wording from me

Hancocks stated in one of the pressers it will be groups 1 to 7 before we'll see a serious roll back as that will take out the huge bulk of hospitalizations as well

They are booking in group 4 already so hopefully the supply holds up

1 Residents in a care home for older adults and their carers
2 All those 80 years of age and over Frontline health and social care workers
3 All those 75 years of age and over
4 All those 70 years of age and over Clinically extremely vulnerable individuals*
5 All those 65 years of age and over
6 All individuals aged 16 years to 64 years with underlying health conditions which put them at higher risk of serious disease and mortality
7 All those 60 years of age and over

That means absolutely nothing without any context and just comes across as fear mongering.
When did he have his first jab? When did he test positive for the 2nd time. How ill is he this time in comparison to the first time he tested positive?

Thought you would still test positive just not develop symptoms as the virus will still go up ones nosser

I like to imagine he's having to isolate in that horrendous narrow red room he does his web press conferences in.
I find it unbelievable that he's been preaching to people to stay in and avoid crowds and then he goes against his own fucking advice!
The man is a pompous arrogant tory tosser who has destroyed this country.

That study posted pages ago about the antibody levels being highest in Yorkshire than elsewhere is very interesting.

As I have been referencing in the data reports each day as it stands out as an anomaly - the one area not seemingly being impacted by this new wave right now is the very one that study found had the highest level of antibodies.

Yorkshire has carried on with modest numbers and risen from one of the worst impacted areas to now the best region in England in all the weekly data tables.

Seems unlikely this is a coincidence.

North West was second best and that fits too as GM is remaining reasonably unaffected by deaths even though there are rising cases.

The optimistic end point here is this becomes an endemic flu like illness which vaccines manage but do not stop you catching just stop the most vulnerable people dying from in all but modest numbers.

That looks like where both the virus mutations are heading and the data starting to support the vaccines might also take us.

I have no idea mate. I just thought Marks post came across as fear mongering. If anyone is going to post info like that, at least add a bit of context to it.
We need to hear both sides, the positive and negative, then we can make informed decisions in regards to our colkective safety.
Unfortunately Marks post makes it sound like you can be infected twice and the vaccine does not work.
Add some context at least.

So you're saying we should all be drinking Yorkshire tea?

Yup. We've learned nothing. Desperate to make the same mistake again and again and again. Depressing.
I'm fucking sick of everyone wanting to push the boundaries to the limit....take a step back, in the long-term it'll likely mean 'normality' arriving quicker.

Seems people are acting like a pisshead walking up the stairs, climb 3 stairs fall back down 2. Just wait until your sober and skip up them.

Lots of other things to think about too, currently. Have they only had one jab and therefore at the lower level of efficacy? How many days since their jab, i.e. under the recommended days from the 1st jab/2nd jab to optimal immunity? Don't think many will have reached second jab optimal immunity yet.

Started with symptoms today. Headache, cough (not bad, but regular) and got the shivers. FFS!

Got to say I'm a bit freaked out. I was yesterday, wondering when/if I'd get it, but shit just got real.

Mrs got symptoms last Friday, tested Sat, positive result Sunday morning. She's ok but feeling groggy and completely lost her voice now. I told her not to be working doing online lessons (from home) yesterday, but no...

Reckon she got it last Monday in school as a colleague who was working in the same staff-room tested +ve on Thursday. But who knows?

Can't believe the school were still insisting that they go in to do remote lessons. The cunts.

I got a test kit delivered, but spoke to Test and Trace (for her as she can't speak) and they said there's no point doing it now as we're isolating for 10 days from today anyway. Just assume I've also got it.

Fingers crossed for everyone who's in a similar boat.
