That trivial example is a symbol for the reason, we (western countries) are failing to handle the pandemic in a better way and are wondering why...But 4/6/8 abreast is wrong whether we’re in a pandemic or not when anyone is trying to get past, it’s just bad manners.
Our individual freedom has reduced awareness, politeness, respect.
Our brains are now brought up and structured that way. We have a much bigger problem in global warming round the corner, but it (still) doesn't hurt us hard enough to react appropriately. The pandemic does but still we don't do what we should do...
I can only speak for Germany, but I guess it's so fundamental that it should be true for UK as well:
our political measures like lockdowns do not have enough effect as most of us citizens are not even able to follow basic rules like keeping distance and wearing the mask in dense situations.
Reasons are: we are unaware of ourselves. Look around, how many people do REALLY keep the right distance? Not many.
We are not used to it. We have to change our behaviour, but how can we do that if we are unaware most of the time? How often e.g. do we touch our face unnoticed?
People don't react anymore if leaders say "keep distance". We would have to answer the question "How can we effectively address the people to do what's necessary?" Talking obviously doesn't work.
I guess, change of behaviour needs too much time which we don't have. I dare not think about the coming weeks in Germany (which is in panic of the more infectious strains) and London, at least.
The race of vaccination versus rising new cases has to be quite perfect, but rarely blue sky scenarios come true, so please take care all of you! Really do.
