I had my corona jab today at the village hall Heald Green.appointment was for 3:20,Home again at 3:31.plenty of staff to show me through the system.May be 30/40 people before me but they had us moving quicker than a Tesco checkout, half a dozen simple questions, name address date of birth and general health.Done and dusted into the daughters car and home, the queue when we left looked the same as when I went in,only downside NO toffee ,PS didn’t,cry.

So
The new variant is killing more people
And
Hancock reckons the SA variant reduces the efficacy of the vaccine by 50%.

still think we’ll be through this this year?

In my very humble opinion
It is easy to say we as a world should have reacted quicker and locked down longer and done things different but at the time we didn't know if a cure or vaccine would be available.

Apart from a total lockdown everywhere I'm not sure what actually could have been done until a cure or virus was found. After just 3 months of lockdown last year despite the warnings of a second wave there was a clamour to open the country back up as people and business wouldn't be able to cope with year in lockdown, all other manner of reasons were being put out why we had to open back up.

Decisions being made were big ones and actually making those decision is a lot tougher than being sat on the sidelines shouting instead of making them. When you have options at each turn A, B,C and D there's no doubt when you pick B and it's wrong there will be plenty of people saying you should have picked D when they themselves would have initially picked B, hindsight is a wondefull thing. When something goes right there are not many on the sidelines shouting they would have been worng.

Mistakes have been made by people in charge there's absolutely no doubt about that but equally some people have not made it easy. You only have to look at the wedding in the UK with 400 people attending after nearly a year of saying no large gatherings. This as been happening every week with all kinds of numbers all over but not all are being caught and reported on. This is what goverments and we as people have been up against when trying to get the virus under control.

It was without a near complete year long lockdown almost impossible.

Most likely even with that alarming sounding headline.
Even if it lowers efficacy it is thought and hoped that the vaccines will still reduce symptons for the vast majority vaccinated to just mild instead of severe.

i wouldnt hold your breath its just my take mate and i have nothing whatsoever to back anything up, but i dont think we have seen the last of these mutations going in the wrong direction, what if one mutation we simply cant controll in any shape or form and the mortality rate is 3 4 or 5 x more than what it is now, i'm running out of confidence with anything at the moment as i suppose many others are to,seriously its enough to turn you to drink

The effectiveness of a vaccine against the SA virus is concerning. Whitty said both that and the Brazil one are concerning them.

Things will improve I’m sure but I don’t think we will ever be fully through this. I remember reading how the virus would weaken and burn itself out. Doesn’t seem like that has happened or is going to happen any time soon.

Did you have the chance to ask any questions ie which vaccine was it Oxford? or something else and did you get an advice leaflet.

the reason I ask is my appointment came through and I’m nervous because of allergies to the flu vaccine but I’m risking it as covid is so devastating to people over 60

Didn’t they say today the 50% claim is a likely a worst case if there is a problem but there’s no way of knowing if it will be that bad yet?

Even at 50% below efficiency, it’ll likely stop many getting seriously ill and dramatically reduce hospitalisations and deaths, all the while it only taking 4-6 weeks for them to amend the vaccines to tackle these variants.

We’ll never be at square one with no vaccine again.

My nan was told it was the Oxford one, in advance I think.

an extra 3 people age 60 per 1000 but the vaccines still works against it. South African variant not prevalent here and Hancock said may.

yes largely.

You’re given a card indicating the date, which vaccine you’ve had, in my case Phizer and also the batch number. They ask all about any allergies you may suffer from.

It's time supermarkets started doing their bit aside from adverts going on about masks and only one person shopping, but then doing bugger all to enforce any of these rules.

I went to do my weekly shop at Aldi today. Although not overly busy, I'd try to time it so it wasn't, there was still couples and whole families shopping. Kids running about grabbing stuff, none in masks, sitting on the counter at the back where you pack your shopping, it winds me up.

Food shopping is the only place I mix now. I have no choice but to go there or I'll starve and deliveries are once again booked up in advance. I understand single parents may have no option but to take their kids but the majority were full families. I feel like I'm playing bloody Russian roulette once a week.
It's a fecking disgrace. The Supermarkets clearly lied through their teeth a week and a half ago.

You're kidding me.

Despite being on an island, with a highly educated and generally compliant population, being one of the richest countries in the world, having a highly advanced life science sector and a health care system at the direct disposal of the government we have the worst death toll in the entire world*

Our pandemic response has been nothing short of a national disgrace. It's absolutely indefensible, and there should be a reckoning for the guilty.

*bar Slovenija, lest anyone wish to quibble.
We are where we are! There are always going to be those who think things could be done better. The Christmas fiasco was a mistake and probably the Eat Out to Help out scheme (must admit I enjoyed it though). We were never going to be locked down like China ... wear masks outside all the time .... we are not a compliant nation. We are an overpopulated nation, end of.

Cant help feeling that this year will be a write off.
Only my opinion but I can see social distancing being in place for the rest of the year but nearly everything open by summer.

Remembering July when you could meet friends in a pub but table service and screens up etc. 6 households meeting.

Shops and offices open with social distancing.

Reckon that will be in place for a long period summer onwards but think we can all live with that.

I really hope so, this lockdown while nowhere near as tight as the first one is really bothering me now.

I feel like I have missed out on a year of seeing my Grandkids, I know that many people have had it much worse though,

I don’t believe a word the government says to be honest, there not going to say no the vaccine won’t work against the new variant because people will say fuck it what’s the point in having it. It is what it is unfortunately think masks social distancing and sporadic lockdowns will be here for the foreseeable future
