Book suggestions

There's some laugh out loud anecdotes as well, the comment to Morrisey whilst the tube was being shot was brilliant.

It is a great book, gets grimmer as the gangs take over on the door and the debts mount up.
 
Can anybody recommend good books on the below bands?

Loads on Amazon with good reviews but I'd like recommendations.

For The Beatles I would go for Revolution In The Head by Ian MacDonald. Basically a How,when and why list of all the songs they recorded. Have read books on The Roses but none I would particularly recommend myself other than War and Peace by Simon Spence as I think there's a story to be told by the members themselves

Never heard of the author or series but they look interesting enough that I've bought both (just £2.99 for the 1st book). As The Mermaid's Pool is a prequel should I read that one first? (despite being the 2nd in the series)

They're both standalone novels really, so I don't think it's necessary to read them in that order. I'd start with Black Moss personally.

Although this book came out before the emergence of QAnon, the anti-vax movement and so on, I was interested in finding out more about how and why people end up acquiring these implausible constellations of belief, and thought that it might still have something to offer.

I wasn't disappointed. The author really does succeed in providing some convincing suggestions as to why people end up buying into what are, essentially, ideologies and world views that consist of nothing more than bullshit.

One suggestion from the philosopher James Garvey cited by Storr is that this kind of thinking represents, 'a way of seeing the world. [For example], in order to be a conservative person in America, you have to be anti-abortion, pro-guns, pro-death penalty, small government, no regulation - and climate is in there too. If you look at that set of beliefs, that's an identity. And you can't change an identity with facts.'

I actually thought that this would be like a Jon Ronson book but Storr's writing has a lot more depth and profundity but is still a page-turner (it's not a difficult read). It should be cheap to get hold of too. Highly recommended.

Keith Richards' autobiography, LIfe, is a thundering good read. As you would expect. Also, it avoids the pitfalls of the “authorised biography”, being as how it's about one member of the band, and his take on them all.
Among many other things, I learnt about something called Merck cocaine, which is apparently the Château Rothschild of recreational drugs.

Animal QC by Gary Bell
It's about Gary's life growing up in Nottingham & supporting & getting into scrapes as a Forrest fan & he then goes on to be a successful Lawer
Very entertaining & funny in parts
Well worth a read
 
I’ve just read First Blood by David Morell. The novel that inspired the film. Lots of similarities but not exactly the same. Interesting to read when you have seen the film twenty times! If anyone would like to read It, I am happy to post it to you!

David Morrell is one of my favourite authors. Pretty much everything he wrote from First Blood to the early 90s is gold.

If you get the time, give "Brotherhood of the Rose" and "The Fraternity of the Stone" a go.

An excellent read. For those into gritty spy thrillers, I would thoroughly recommend Mick Herron’s “Slough House” series. Brilliantly written and soon to be an Apple TV series. It’s almost as if Herron wrote the Jackson Lamb character with Gary Oldman in mind.
 
Just finished The Book Thief and also Bruce Springsteen Born to Run - thoroughly enjoyed both
