Only to the extent that the short positions have to be closed out. If the shorts are for say 1,000 shares and small investors buy up 2,000. Then some are not going to be cashing in on the flip side of the short contracts. There is also the issue around timing. When exactly are the contracts up.

As ever there is a time to buy and a time to sell.
You're right to some extent. I don't know enough about it to understand what the ceiling is for these stocks and whether they are already there at $400 for GME. I've placed an order at $200 on the off chance there is a wild swing downwards at some point today like there was yesterday, otherwise I'm steering clear of that particular one.

Yep, mine too.
Individual UK shares seem to have done the worst but nowhere's looking particularly good.

this is the major problem.

A few people making short term money on shit companies because of internet rumours is not good for the markets and peoples investments and pensions long term.

my long term funds and the markets are all now taking a hit as confidence in the markets starts to suffer.

I would argue that the problem is the unscrupulous hedge funds manipulating the markets. You can't blame people for catching them out and making a profit at their expense.

there will be many investments and funds that have these shares and so benefit. Swings and roundabouts.

Next month it may well be your funds and investments that benefit from something unusual

Hedge funds shorting companies is the problem - Do your research.

two wrongs don’t make a right,

the Confidence in the market and actually investing in good companies is at stake .

i know it’s happened for years . The old city desk boys at the sun used to recommend shares they bought on a rumour. And make shit loads

All of these things don’t help the situation.

People BUYING stocks because they like the stock is market manipulation ?

Stop talking shit.

maybe try the decaf

GME is a failing bricks and mortar games selling company that makes losses. It’s a shit company hence the hedge funds shorting it.

people aren’t buying the stock because they like the company they are buying it because of the rumour. the company is still a bag of shit.

it’s all a problem , it’s market manipulation. Whether a Wall Street hedge fund or retail investors market rumours on the internet .
Retail investors sharing knowledge and buying stock is not a problem and is not market manipulation. Hedge funds shorting perfectly good companies and spreading false rumours is.

You dodgy inverstors on here better not be messing up my pension pot :)
Mine lost loads this week and every market is in the red again today. I expect America will be at 2:30 when they open too!

Going to be seriously down this week and this Game Stop is far too volatile for me!

I'm no expert, but surely your pension fund should be long-term and widely-spread enough to not be affected by a few people dicking about with a single company's stocks?

This is a very relevant scam to bring up here. The Sun journos noticed the bump in the stocks they tipped each day and then started trading on those stocks to profit on the bump. This became very profitable for them and it went on for years.

The internet is the wild west of information. Anyone can say any old shit and there is very very little consequence ever. If the above was run via internet chat room you could never stop it let alone investigate / bring anyone to justice. Not saying there is a scam going on - but you have to recognise the potential.

You should read some of these posts with an open mind - you might just learn something.
