I've seen speculation along these lines, but I don't think there's any real evidence for it. But it's not something I have any expertise in whatever.

Good article here on evolution of the virus. Kicker

There is no general evolutionary law for predicting how these relationships will pan out, and certainly no justification for evoking the inevitability of decreased virulence.

That is a very interesting and balanced take.

I can see both arguments.

But equally no human versus virus battle has ever been fought so strongly by mankind in so swift a time scale on a truly global level. That is bound the shift the evolutionary goalposts a little.

We will see. But that global decrease if it continues to be real in what look like diverse areas must have some logic behind it that is not local but at least on a semi global level.

It may be no more than we now know the most effective shut down measures for transmission and that news is understood globally. Helped by vaccine roll out spreading and accelerating.

I guess it is watch and wait. Another reason we are not going to rush back to anything like normality. Tempting as that is.

Watching how the vaccines behave in the real world not tests against the new variants will be the real big deal coming up.

Might seem a daft Question but does Ventilated mean actually being on a Ventilator, or does it include other ways of helping people breath that are not as intrusive as being Ventilated?
It means a bed with ventilator facilities attached I think so patients likely to be either on this or at risk of needing it. Though it differs a little in definition in the data as per country.

Scotland have changed the meaning and the data several times in the pandemic. So its basically a measure of the most sick patients. Many of whom will be ventilated.

454 all settings deaths

12, 057 cases

From 79 K more pillar 1 & 2 tests than yesterday too - 546, 352

2.2% positivity - though it will be higher as these lateral tests now dominate so it is tough to comeup with a meaningful figure

Even so we are not talking more than around 5% and this is below last few days. So the trend is good.

But at 10, 740 only 186 fewer than yesterday in England.

Not sure I agree with this. I think it's not necessarily anything more than once people see hospitals full of dying people, they impose restrictions which reduce caseloads, rather than anything to do with the virus changing. The world peak doesn't have to be more than the sum of many local peaks.

Immunity acquired through infection must play some part, but all the evidence is that nowhere has got close to genuine herd immunity yet (though India is interesting and not well understood). Vaccination definitely not yet significant globally.

Alright, in a bit of a predicament. Wife has just rang me to say she couldn't taste the sweets she just ate. She could taste her breakfast this morning and otherwise is fine, I am fine. Am I now supposed to leave work and not go back until she's had a test and got her results? That feels pretty extreme over (no offence) a woman having a panic over a packet of sour mix?

Get her to swig some vinegar

Get her to test something else, if she can’t then yes, send her for a test and both of you isolate.

It’s a bummer I know... I had to do back to back isolations, 24 days in a row I didn’t leave the house.

deaths in England ALL settings, percentage breakdown by age (date of death, not reported, up to Feb 13th)

over 90s staying high (decreased in real numbers), but 80 - 90 really coming down now. 75-79 only appearing to increase but it's proportional, their decrease is happening a bit slower at the moment (in real numbers they're down 50% since end of Jan).

422,576 first doses and 4497 second doses administered in England yesterday.

No sign of the pace slackening thankfully.
UK wide numbers also looking good

1st dose: 482.1K, compared to 450.8K on the equivalent day last week
2nd dose: 15,187.

Interesting that just under 30% of 2nd doses were in England and 42% were in Wales.

Is that a euphemism? As I don't think it's the time for that.

On a more serious note, she said she could taste them, just not very much. Seems like the sort of thing I wouldn't even consider, but she might be on edge a bit?

Could just be the start of a cold/sore throat. Still lots of mild viruses knocking about.

Not sure anyone else has had a similar experience but when I go for a walk and I walk along a fairly busy road, I keep getting cold like symptoms. May just be air pollution and not being used to it as I spend almost all of my time at home.

Well I've booked work off for tomorrow and we'll see how she's feeling after that, she's got a test booked just in case but I'd be surprised if it wasn't just stress and worrying making her overthink things. From what I gather, if she had it as a symptom of COVID she'd completely lose her taste for a period of time, not just partially? I guess we'll see
