Kevin Keegan

It was the worst atmosphere ever at the MS, like you say, most of the stadium was closed.
I took 3 of my kids, they were young at the time & spent the entire game running about around the concourse with all the other kids.
It was a fcuking dire, dreary game too
Yes - had all the atmosphere of a youth game.

The keegan years started well but we drifted into mediocrity. I think of them as the lost years in city's recent history. Pre Keegan was the roller-coaster of the late 90's and the end of Maine Rd. The early years of the new stadium under Keegan / Pearce / Sven were a non event in comparison to what had gone before and after.

Keegan had the last 2 seasons at MR.

That game is probably only memorable for Christian Negouia scoring his 2nd and final goal for us...at least he didnt punch this one in. Remember KK saying Negouia was his most exciting signing,

Great first season, good consolidation back in the Prem and instead of buying the 2 or 3 players needed to augment the team, even at the risk of taking a gamble and having a thin squad he just bought in a load of journeymen with Fowler being the last straw, so obvious he wasn't going to be a good fit. Loved KK though and that Div 1 season was a lot of fun :-)

I know it won't happen, but I'd love to see KK come back into football for one last hurrah.

When you look at Newcastle now under Bruce now, what type of footballer gets inspired going to SJP to practice parking the bus? None of them. Jeez, get KK back and they will be challenging for Europe in a couple of months! Newcastle and City fans love him as a manager and if it wasn't for KK, I'm not sure where we'd be now.

I do wonder if KK thinks he was a failure in some way. As a player he was off the scale but as a manager he took Newcastle from the doldrums to title challengers (no one else has done that), he took City from the doldrums into the PL playing football only bettered by Pep. Sure, he wasn't good enough for England but he's in a pretty big club there.

I don't think the guy realises how much he was loved as a player and manager.

It would be lovely when the fans are back to bring KK back to give him a big "Happy Birthday".

I think he falls in and out of love with football. I used to bump into him quite a bit a few years ago in Hale and he always had his grandkids with him, you get the impression he's all about family and no amount of money would ever entice him back to the game.

A nice little story about him though which I think I've told on here before but it merits being told again: he went in the shop next door to where I worked one morning and the lady who worked there told him her friend was a big Newcastle fan who had always idolised him, so he went back into the shop later that day with a load of Newcastle memorabilia that he'd signed and said "please give all this to your friend"

What a guy!

The club have made a video for his 70th birthday. Some great memories there. Probably my favourite time watching City until the takeover.

Mighty morse getting his chest signed in the opening gambit (:, he'll dine on that one, sure he’s lurking

great times in a dark period behind the scenes, say what you want about Keegam, at least he brought back some excitement on the pitch, Anelka, SWP, Foe (rip), distan et al, we had a decent spine for a while..

Happy birthday you big bottler (:

Lovely story that and just shows what kind of person he is. It's nice to hear he seems to be enjoying his family time too.

Yes you're right about falling out of love with football it's such a shame. The league needs the KKs in it!

I met him and Sven at a charity lunch a couple of years ago, didn’t bother with Sven, had a good ten minutes with Keegan, genuinely and nice guy and loved his time at City. Very funny too. Happy Birthday KK
Was also at the FA cup comeback v Spurs what a night that was.
"Didnt bother with Sven"
Brilliant.

I went to that game at the Millennium Stadium. Roof closed, 80% of the ground closed off and seated so high at the back of the stand it was hard to recognise the players.
Total lack of any atmosphere.
Yep.it was awful.on a par with bristol rovers away at Bath.it was dull.a complete non event..waste of money.

Amazing, crazy first season under Keegan. Think it was Norwich early on, walked away from ground thinking its going to be eventful. Best decision he made was keeping hold of the Goat, tried to sell him if I recall. Great man with a lot of well channelled passion

Lot of respect to Kevin Keegan, one of our better managers, his enthusiasm was fantastic, he wore his hart on his sleeve. You have to remember we did not have the money to spend, so we had to buy bargain basement, players past there best, but we had good times. He was also a great player, good luck Kevin, hope to see you one day at City.

Spot on re KK having to rely on bargain basement players, some fans forget that.
He was a great player at Liverpool Hamburg Southampton and Newcastle.not born a gifted footballer, but worked his socks off and made the very best of his abilities, had that almost telegraphic understanding with big John Toschack at Liverpool which produced countless goals, and had the balls to leave Anfield where he had won almost every honour in the game,to try his luck in Germany,a brave decision which didnt turn out to badly at all....For England,as a forward he was brilliant. As a player at Anfield,St james Park and The Dell,City got battered good and rproper with Keegan in the home side.

A lot of fans over the years claimed he had no backbone as a manager, always resigning, but the brand of football he demanded his teams play, mark him out to be a brave man.Fans of both City and Newcastle under his mangement would certaintly say that the football they witnessed under him was top class.

As a manager and player Keegan put everything into his professional career, definitely one of my favourite characters in the game,..over the years.

Except that at the time £7m on Fowler and £5m on macken and £5m on vuoso were quite substantial sums and wastes.
I don’t blame Keegan for that though he was trying to aim high.

I'll tell you what I remember about Keegan: that promotion season and how good we were. It wasn't unlike this season in that we were battling with Wolves early doors but then we pulled right away. The away victory against them was one of the high points.

Anyway, I remember turning to my Dad in the main stand maybe halfway through the season and just laughing and saying "No one's going to stop us, Dad". I've only felt that another two times in 45 years of watching City: about halfway through the centurians season, and then again about a month or so ago.
