Offside judgement (Laporte v Wolves)

the rules state it was offside.
it was offside.
If the rules are wrong, that's a bigger debate.

As soon as the lino flags - it becomes a case of clear and obvious error. That wasn't a clear and obvious error.
The rules state that the player is offside when the assister passes or touches the ball “*The first point of contact of the 'play' or 'touch' of the ball should be used”

And this was not used with Bernardo’s headed assist.

The assistant flagged so would have been disallowed anyway even without var. Worth noting that Jesus’s goal would have been disallowed also if it wasn’t for var correcting the offside decision.

there is.

See the problem is people don't know the rules and then get massively offended at every decision.

Why are people always looking to be offended?
The rules keep changing tho! And the VAR protocol in England is different from other countries. And I’m not sure whether the reffing team actually understood it as they spent ages with the lines when they didn’t need to!

The issue with your point about going with the linesman’s decision is, the linesmen currently have clear instructions not to flag for offsides unless there is a clear offside and they are 100% sure. They are told to let the play continue, unless there is no question its offside.
Well yes, but only in the moment. They're supposed to allow play to continue and then flag during a break in play or a breakdown of the move. If that break in play happens to be a goal, then they flag after the goal is scored, which is what they did tonight. The goal happened almost instantly after the possible offside, so the flag went up instantly. If a marginal offside had been 20 seconds earlier in the build up to the goal, then she would have waited until the goal and then put her flag up for the offside 20 seconds earlier.

the rules change with the technology.

There were dinosaurs bemoaning the backpass rule as well. Sure Liverpool didn't win a league for 30 years after the backpass rule :D

they were masters at it. Go one up. Pass it back to the keeper all day.

So if I read the rules right, if we switch to those Cameroon world cup shirts without any sleeves, we can be half a foot further forwards without being offside? We're missing a trick here
I was thinking that. At the very least, we'll probably see clubs asking manufacturers to shave an inch or two off the length of the sleeves. Although about three companies make all of the shirts, so it won't make much difference.

I genuinely struggle to watch old games because of this. It just makes defending so easy. That and the fact that you can put your studs through any attacker and get away with it.

The VAR rules only apply in England though

rules improving the game are fine. I don’t think the VAR offside does (mainly because of the tech inaccuracies)

interested in your take tho, if the Lino call was subject to clear and obvious rules in terms of overturning do you think it was necessary to delay the game for several minutes to draw the lines up?

Italia '90 was the changing of football. It was so shit the authorities had enough, and with USA '94 and them trying to break the USA market, it had to change.

Am l going sken eyed or is the yellow line veering slightly away from the goal line? Parallel lines should appear to be getting closer the further away the get from the eye/camera.
I believe the lines are parallel. What I don't like with VAR is two things:

1. You can't freeze the frame at the exact time when the ball is kicked forward on any VAR offside decision.

2. A hairs length is not a "clear and obvious" error, so why check using VAR, never mind accepting their decision.

yes. it is what var is for. in order to overturn the decision, due diligence has to be implemented. It's why VAR is there. Otherwise just scrap it.

This is why the refs and Pigmol need to be miked up and be audible so we can all understand and learn what they are debating.

It would educate us all and be transparent

They do it in cricket an rugby so why the mute secrecy in football which only goes to spin the corrupt angle.

The sooner they come out and let all hear ehat they are sating the better all parties will be.

Sort the handball shite out first though.

Rugby is always held up as the pinnacle and it boils my piss. England lost a six nations match because the ref absolutely buggered them senseless the weekend just gone

he actually came out in public and said he fucked up

and they only play about 10 games a fucking year.

There is premier league nearly 24/7 now - always on tv, always scrutinized.

I dont know the laws? LOL..... Show me where clear and obvious comes into it on line calls. The problem is people who think they know the laws but dont!

“Factual decisions such as whether a player is onside or offside, or inside or outside the penalty area, will not be subject to the clear and obvious test”

Not my words....

But if the lines showed he was 1mm onside then why have a clear and obvious criteria? The lino’s subjective decision that Eric was offside couldn’t be clearly and obviously wrong, surely?

Also his foot is over the yellow line so even from the bullshit sleeve rule he’d probs still be onside
