Covid and travel discussion

It's a novel idea but the government haven't offered any hint of support for this year yet, so I'm not sure it would be quite as easy as that.

We're currently on eggshells awaiting the task force review....depending on the severity of what is said the industry could be looking at possible collapse without intervention. I just hope if they do pull the rug from under us they at least mitigate the damage with some financial help, but it needs a shitload of cash pumping into it...I'm not sure they have the inclination, time will tell.

I see Phuket is going to welcome vaccinated Brits from 1st July. No word on the rest of Thailand but it's a step in the right direction and possibly indicates how long haul travel can open up again; Bali have looked at similar by having designated tourism areas open as opposed to the whole island.

Praying for good news on the teaser on the 5th and full announcement on the 12th.
Whilst I appreciate the issues in the travel industry there is a bigger picture. What activities are potentially going to bring pressure on the NHS. At the moment given the world outlook and our position it's international travel. So we are going to have to mitigate this by keeping the restrictions. I don't think think we can do this piecemeal

If the Government decide they need to scrap international leisure travel for the foreseeable then yeah it'll be disappointing but I'm not gonna argue with them given everything going on.
Surely in that case it's not too much to expect them to prop up the industry until it can return in some proper capacity?
Given that it would be impossible for us to trade, on the back of the 12 previous months where it's been nigh on impossible to trade.

My concern is they will pull the plug on us but leave us completely high and dry financially.

The industry, and the hundreds of thousands of people employed within it either directly or indirectly, simply cannot afford another washout summer without proper sector specific, tailored help from the Government.

This is the drum I am beating and will continue to beat, even though it seems to fall on deaf ears to people on the outside.

At what point will they stop testing etc I wonder because as everyone gets the jab it becomes similar to flu then doesn’t it, there will be deaths from Covid 19 every year like flu so when do they stop and it just becomes like that. Going off current rates of inoculations everyone should be done by September, then probably boosters every year. Someone at some point is going to have to say its acceptable deaths as they have with flu, aren’t they?
Yes, this will be exactly what happens.

But we can’t just go round spreading it to other countries where they haven’t had the vaccination output that we have at the moment/this year. We’ll be killing thousands of their citizens, just because we’ve been vaccinated and want a holiday doesn’t mean we should be allowed to have one.

We should only be allowed to travel to places who have also had good vaccine numbers.

Totally agree but if I was say Tenerife for example I’d get everyone on the island done and say unless you’ve had the jab you can’t come in, they could then re open up. This fuss about variants could last forever, you are never going to stop it once now it’s out there, there will be a France or Italian variant soon as they are slow in uptake, it could be never ending and I think at some point the masses will say enough is enough. You only have to go outside now and apart from pubs and shops everywhere is normal, yes people wear masks and it could become the norm ot people may just say fuck it.

Minister's saying they don't think this year, but could be paper talk who knows.

It might turn out to be true, just like it might turn out to be true that City sign Ings, but it is nothing but paper talk for now.

''Ministers considering cancelling all summer holidays abroad, Whitehall source tells i''

Is what it says as part of their front page on the i newspaper, though more a fleeting comment at the bottom than a headline or sub-headline.

Yet more unhelpful rumours from the media, after an already turbulent week thanks to their £5k fine headlines that were completely misleading and half baked. Talk about sticking the boot into an industry already a shell of its former self.

I didn't think 17th May was realistic but I did think/hope that sometime in June onwards would see the return.
I'm now starting to doubt that myself, and just hope we get the answers (be they good or bad) by the 12th April.

There already is a Brittany variant that doesn’t show up on tests.

We’ve got a staycation booked in the Cotswolds and praying for decent weather. We are struggling to arrange a private chef and household staff though to accompany us, the agency we normally use have no availability.

Think he has brought it forward to the 5th hasn’t he so not too much longer to wait. One paper reporting no holidays before August today. I don’t mind either way, just want to know so can make alternative plans. Last year we ended up in the Lakes for 4 nights and it rained every day. It was a nice change of scene but that’s about it. This year if it’s cancelled again (July) then I’m going to book somewhere in London and take the daughter for her first trip there. Might get an apartment for a week and just have a proper mooch around with the odd train trip to Brighton and similar easy to get to places.

Boris has hinted at some clues on the 5th but the travel task force announcement is still the 12th.
No doubt Johnson will just muddy the waters even further a week on Monday!
