Stunning piece of radio, Amaechi was brilliant on this subject. Eye opening stuff to be honest. Although I am sure the racists will pile in on Lammy, he gets a lot of stick from them.

Lammy was fortunate that LBC caller the other day was racist and stupid with it (even by stupid racist standards). Because while every man and his dog is falling over to pat him on the back, in reality he was talking utter bollocks.

In England and Wales, there are 18 ethnic groups recommended for use by the government when asking for someone’s ethnicity. These are grouped into 5 ethnic groups, each with an ‘Any other’ option where people can write in their ethnicity using their own words. Lammy can be many things, but he can't be white English and neither can Sunak, and there isn't any other variation of English that they fall in to.....British on the other hand is as much theirs as it is mine.

Clearly in Lammy world an ethnic group has to be pure and any evidence of rumpy pumpy with foreigners is an instant plunge in to the melting pot (I thought melting pot was a left wing no no).

Besides, you can't have an ethnic minority without an ethnic majority and if white English is not an ethnicity there's nothing to be a minority to.

I think the only councillor with a criminal conviction for breaking the code of conduct was a guy who was a non-exec unpaid director of a charity (but claimed expenses) and voted on the Local Plan core strategy, and the charity owned land that might have got some benefit. He'd declared the interest but still voted. So if the Council budget includes a small grant to a local charity for socially-useful work, any councillor who's a trustee might be affected.

Well I'd say you can be a combination of things no? White english, black english etc. I might be lacking in my interpretation of ethnicity or conflating it with nationality, but if someone is born in England not sure how they could be denied describing themselves as English (or British).

I’m not sure census categories are the best way to go with it either with ethnic groups. Scotland for example has both Black Scottish and Black British as options on theirs.

The census is not the best way to go about it, I agree, the categories they want counting are primarily concerned with finding out who lives where for the purpose of allocation of resources, so fuzzy edges are not the issue, though it's notable they specify Black British and not Black English. For example Jewish people are now cast as an ethnic group, until fairly recently they were treated as a religious group, but for the purposes of the census it is of no mind.

Notwithstanding this, it is self evidently true that ethnic groups exist and English is one of them and David Lammy is not ethnically English, that is simply a fact and stating it does not come with hidden meaning, it is simply a fact.

To you I don’t know, that’s essentially the question I asked you! Aside from it is or isn’t an option on the census, why is black British fine but black English isn’t?

I’m not saying I have an answer personally, just querying it.
