I've got an idea, call me crazy but why not have a European competition that only the teams that win their domestic leagues can enter? A simple knockout format from the very first draw, played home and away, with away goals counting double. Call it, oooh, I don't know, the European Cup or something like that. You could have Real Madrid v Juventus as the first tie - exciting!! Everyone else finishing in 2nd and 3rd positions can all play each other in a league format system, reverting to a knockout stage later on and call that the UEFA Cup.
