People in favour for reasons of having games between better teams haven’t realised that the only reason CL football works is the knock out format.

Group games are dire and those between the big teams arent much more interesting than against the lesser teams.

Take away the risk of going out if you lose a match and the whole illusion is lost.

Its not who you play against its the stakes the game has and as soon as it matters less because you’re guaranteed to play next season or you can afford a loss and still make the top 3 and the edge is gone.

Terrible

Let's actually drill down into the league winners.

From 1992- Liverpool, City, United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Blackburn, Leicester.

So you've got Chelsea whose billionaire owner spent so much they made it illegal, City who came next and broke FFP to compete and became public enemy number 1, Leicester who broke FFP to compete, Blackburn who would have broken FFP if it existed but were such a flash in the pan they didn't need dealing with. Other than that you've got your old established super clubs - United, Arsenal, Liverpool - the 3 clubs with the most league titles since 1888.

Compare that to the 30 years before the Premier League and you had 12 different winners.

@Damocles is right, the league is a competition between 4 clubs - United, City, Chelsea, Liverpool - and it's going to be that way for as long as FFP or financial controls exist with or without a super league.
Correct re winners but the league isn't just about who wins it. The league is competitive because clubs fight tooth and nail to be part of it. To finish top 4 and get that CL spot. To finish 17th or higher to get another season in the big time. If you take away the incentive to compete, you take away the competitive edge that makes the Prem so damn good.

We will be left with a bunch of teams that traditionally finish mid-table, who year-on-year have have nothing to play for. The sole purpose of these teams will be to make up the numbers and provide the elite with their next batch of players, they will have much less power than the little they already have. For the likes of Everton, Leeds, Villa and many others to be forced into a position of nothing more than also-ran, feeder clubs, with no discernible way out is an absolute disaster for the game.

I've been pilloried on here for arguing that the soul of the club was being eroded slowly by CFG model.

This is the final nail for me

As I said in an earlier post, the takeover in 2008 presented me with a problem. The City that I grew up watching was going to go away and in its place was a new City that was going to be more globalised but more professional and successful. Each of us have/has to deal with the realities of the takeover and adapt our support in the way that we felt comfortable with. I decided that ultimately the investment will be good for Manchester and I'll enjoy watching us thump teams 6-0 rather than be on the end of the thumping but the payment for that is that we'd have our values eroded until we became a Man United type club. For many people this will be that moment where they decide what they want to do and I don't envy them because I remember how difficult a decision it was for me too. This is why I'm not criticising people who are legitimately questioning their support - I think it's sensible response to this.

There used to be a post about the Glazers often seen on here that always stuck with me. If you suck the devil's dick then eventually you have to swallow. We have Pep and all the development in Manchester and 93:20 and even smaller things like a lot of City fans who can now make money as "content creators" to a global audience and feed their families. But now this is our turn to swallow.

I honestly can’t see any of the 6 staying in the premier league, it just can’t work.. say 4 out of the 6 finish in the top 4 does the premier league offer the champs league to positions 5th downwards to 8th ????
I honestly think this will be pulled at the 11th hour.

Why are we helping those that sought to destroy us?? The old elite were screwed, the dippers and rags only aim recently is to make top 4 as we under current rules blew them out of the water. No we have thrown them and the others a life line and do we seriously think they will not try and dump on us again???
It's because our club is tired with "Legacy fans" and want new support from "fans of the future" aka foreign FIFA21 kids.

I think I’m most disappointed in the fact we are being led into this by those who have actively seeked to destroy us over the last decade.
There was always an inevitability about a SL happening and when it did, us being a part of it was a no brainer from an owners POV.
I just can’t accept it under these circumstances though and our club statement last night made me feel ill.
It was a generic pile of shite which isn’t something I associate with our owners, I always believed they had a bit more about them and understood what the majority of supporters felt.
Quoting the likes of Joel fucking Glazer as if he’s our pal and not offering up any explanations to the fanbase has left a proper bitter taste in my mouth.
I can’t say I’m done with the club, I’m too invested at this point in my life and there’s still an awful lot about this club that makes me proud - Foden being the latest.
But I am extremely sad that reality has come to show that we aren’t as special as I once thought and our willingness to support an idea cooked up by our biggest detractors is a huge blow.
We no longer have any moral leverage, we can no longer accuse the American owners of being the leeches that they are. We have become all we have despised over the years and that’s the hardest thing for me to wrap my head around.

i hope they do , let the "big 6" fuck off and play there plastic games , kick them out of the league , carry on the prem and champions league as normal , most football fans wouldn't give a fuck if the big 6 fucked off.
Tbh after all this ,city included i would be happy for them too as well, the commercialisation of football is killing it .
This will be the pinnacle of it tbh.
Its disgraceful to the likes of west ham and Leicester who have worked there asses off to be in with a shout of the champions league .
Footballs about competition .
Fuck this nonsense .
As people have said i dont see how this can coincide with league football ,as there is no incentive any more to finish top 4 or top 6 .
If it does go ahead ,ill try and find a local non league club to support .
Bollocks to it .

Rotation, presumably. Devalue it and treat it like the early rounds of the domestic cups. This is one of the most damaging aspects as I see it.

Except we don't have to suck it up do we?

We can fuck it off.

As every single genuine football fan should
As ever selective quoting misses the whole point.

I was talking about capitalism, not football.

I wonder what the players think about this? Not just our players but players from any of the 6 english clubs involved?

They’re all keen to get it out there on social media, broadcast their opinions & nail their ethics to all kinds of issues but they’re silent on this one.

I wonder if it’s self interest?

Maybe they’re all waiting to see which way things got before deciding what their ethical take should best be in respect of their best future earnings?

Maybe the clubs have threatened to nail their heads to the floor if they dare to out speak and they’re all terrified of giving an opinion?

Sadly, I think it’s the former.

The only other thing I would say is that when the Premier League started, people were saying that would destroy English Football but that didn't exactly happen.
