When SoccerMania gets underway they're gonna need to make hype packages to create the illusion of importance and what not.

I'm guessing the clubs themselves can give them footage of their previous matches etc

The question is do sky and the like own the copyright to some of those clips exclusively and of so how long until they give up their library for that sweet, sweet JP Morgan dollar?

There is a lot of hypocrisy going on over this.

Liverpool protesting, why were they not protesting when they qualified for the CL by the back door and won it. That was the start of devaluing the competition for me, when champions and others qualified.

If anyone is too feel aggrieved its Forest and Villa, they have won the EC, we havent, Spurs, Arsenal havent.

Where was the fans moaning about the setting up of the PL. I dont recall mass protests about that.

And City fans, where were the mass protests against Thaksin...the lack of protest then lead to the Sheikh

The vast majority of rag cunts were happy with the yanks as long they were winning.

Gary Neville said fuck all as long as United were winning

Where were the Chelsea protests against Abramovich

How come that **** Johnson is suddenly interested in football fans, especially after the shit he wrote about Hillsborough

When have the tories been against capitalist exploitation.
We did not win the title last season, but qualified and are in a good position to win the Champions league so you argument is irrelevant.

This is a anti football position, anti competition argument, club rivalry is irrelevant, we should be anti greedy owners.

Florentino said in the interview yesterday that clubs can’t walk back on the ESL

He said a lot of things that have been proven to be outright lies (Dortmund/Bayern not being invited to the SL, for example)

Absolutely no way there isn't an exit here, the question is if the club have the integrity remaining and balls to use it before it's too late.

But it won’t. ESL is a closed shop like you said. It’s not part of the football pyramid. Europa league is a 2nd rate UCL because both are directly linked. Clubs drops from UCL to Europa and direct qualify for UCL if they win Europa. It’s a ladder. ESL is a separate thing. It has nothing to do CL. Half the clubs in the ESL are dogshit. It’s not a competition for best performing teams on the pitch that season.
Dogshit with a lot more money. I don't know, could be wrong -- there might be a link between money and the kind of players sides can employ. Need to check up on this though.

I wouldn't be shocked to see a walk back from City next couple days, much as I thought it impossible.

Uefa were speaking to us yesterday and it sounds like we may have been offered something to break away from the breakaway.

Football politics, eh?

Also, keep an eye on Infantino. We are much more closely aligned to him and even discussed a Super League of sorts with him which would have seen Soft Bank put up the funds, a firm Abu Dhabi has a big stake in.
Buy messi, buy haaland, buy mbappe
Then pull out!

Every front page is on this today, and I think the owners of the English clubs have hugely underestimated the strength of feeling this has generated. They apparently expected anger but no focus groups could have prepared them for this. Would expect some vigorous rowing back in the coming days.

Fuck yeahhh ! Walk away City !
Another breakaway league? We can play with NYCFC, Mumbai City FC and the umpteen clubs we have.

I don't see this as an irreparable situation for our owner/chairman, if there is the possibility to pull out of this deal and they do that, for two reasons.

1) This was not driven by our ownership's/management's greed. I can still look at it logically, our owner has invested a lot of money and along with Khaldoon and the rest of club's hard work, they've come a long way. They don't want to suddenly have the club left out in the cold(and go backwards), so I do understand to certain degree. I'm sure the ESL is the last thing they wanted to see because they don't actually need it(that for me is the soundest logic). There are a minority of fans willing to get on board with it for similar reasons, it's fear and uncertainty, not because they want a ESL. There would be a much longer road back if it was solely driven by greed and power-lust. So I hope the usual moral crusaders among the press will be asking lots of questions to United and Liverpool fans, in respect of that, in the coming months and years. How Henry and the Glazers got off so lightly with the Project Big Picture plans, because of their reluctance to single them out, makes me think they will just do the same things again though.

2) The CL itself has been heading the same way only much much slower, a closed shop. There's only so hurt you can be, unless you really have been burying your head in the sand for 20 years or more. I'm pissed of and disappointed too but there has to be some perspective once the dust has settled. It's already been unfair for many years but most of us still want City to win the CL all the same and the PL every year. Lets not act like football(the PL and the CL both) isn't already half way there.

So yeah, there definitely is a way back from this. City leading the way on ditching it, would be a big start.

All I want, is City to pull out of the deal publicly(if it's legally possible) and an admission that they made the wrong call/lost their nerve about being left behind to the fans(probably wont admit the latter). I'm not expecting Khaldoon or Sheikh Mansour to personally kiss the arse of every fan who felt let down about this, that's naive in my view.
Just woke up and was about to post something very similar

My only concern is that our owners wont do it because the threat of this ESL is actually going to happen, and regardless of all the anti-esl statements from the bodies a deal will be struck with the PL and other leagues

It’s not 13 though is it. You’ve completely ignored the new Swiss model approved by UEFA yesterday which increases the games by quite a bit. We can absolutely still play in domestic cups in ESL.

I don’t get the top 4 argument. The CL still exists. Now Burnley will be gutted that West Ham have made the CL spots. The big 6 is out of the equation, nobody cares. It might be less exciting for us, but for the other 14, it’s massively more exciting. They now actually have a chance at qualifying for CL - almost a certainty instead of just a dream. This is hands down better for the rest of the league.

You're not getting it at all.

If the ESL goes ahead the CL is dead. There will be no money in it and there will be no appetite to be in it if the biggest clubs in Europe aren't in it.

If the ESL goes ahead the PL is dead. 6 clubs in it who won't give a shit where they finish in the league as it doesn't matter a hot as they'll still be competing in the ESL.

All integrity in the PL will be gone. Imagine this scenario.... towards the end of the season City are playing in the latter stages of the ESL with hundreds of millions of pounds at stake.

Last game of the season we're playing a relegation threatened team, a team that's currently 2 points behind the team in 17th. City field a reserve team because the ESL is so much more important to the club and lose the game leading to the team currently above the relegation zone going down.

That sort of thing will happen throughout the season. The 6 have a big game midweek in the ESL.... field a weakened team in the PL.

No integrity left in the PL whatsoever which will soon lead to the death of the league

We can im sure

Cant believe im having the same thoughts. Didnt sleep much last night, wondering about where it will all end.
Florentino is being wheeled out to try and make the others hold their nerve
I think a few arses maybe falling out at the moment including ours!

We're not exactly UEFA's best mates though are we? Or maybe this was all just a cunning plan to smoke out our enemies and detach them from positions of power.

Spit and Neville both missing the point....it's about money. Certain clubs need money. They need huge amounts of it and they need it now.

and the guaranteed 100 of millions for 23 years says to me this will go ahead!

if you play it out with this super league>

premier will not kick out the six teams

there will be still a uefa European league competition.

5 clubs across the big leagues can qualify for this super league, so say winning the premier will get you in!

The closed shop is the one thing that is wrong!

If football is not US the CITY FANS - and theryre saying fuck us.. which they are! Then that’s it fuck the sheik and city and the yanks this is our sport our city....

The 12 involved would be in it even if they were currently in the relegation places. 'big', 'historical', and 'top' are just euphemisms for most money. Come to think of it, by any measure Spurs are an odd inclusion though.

The first real error by our board and owner, what a day it would be if they held up their hands and pledged loyalty to fans and the future of football whilst admitting the lure of esl blurred the decision making.

Surely they cant be that naive, the yanks maybe, but im struggling to understand why they didint see this backlash coming. Especially doing this in the middle of a pandemic when so many smaller clubs and lower leagues are really struggling. It just looks plain awful.

Is that possible given the JP Morgen involvement, to just walk away I mean?

But it wont get the money that will be on offer to a ESL. Itll be second rate because some teen in thailand/china/usa wont want to pay to watch villa v roma, he wants to pay to watch juve v real.
So the chanps league will ultimately become second rate and the europa will die a death
