It could be all down to Sterling.
If he's not in the starting line up for the CL Final (which i hope he isn't and said without malice) I can see him throwing his Toys out of the pram. If so the question is where would he go and who could afford him. I have long thought he sees himself at Madrid but they are skint. An exchange involving Kane. ? Not many options open and if Pep goes for Grealish there is surely no room for him.

Would he want to go to spurs? No
Would spurs pay his wages? No

If he wants a bumper pay packet his options are very limited, in fact I can’t think of a club tbh.

If I was him I would renew my contract with city and take what was on offer.

Debruyne will definitely be playing as a RCM next season and this makes Sterling the best winger to have on that wing.
Because we all know how good partnership they have and are used to play together.

For this purpose I see why his contract is a priority.. Of course as a LW - he isn't / wasn't / won't be as good, even though that like against Liverpool at Anfield - he was magnificent, but on average he couldn't deliver there and also Phil is untouchable there.

It's like why Pep wants to buy Jack Grealish so desperately - because he sees the potential of Grealish-Foden partnership on the left wing.

And if you add Kane to that...

Can any of them play left back?

Been a good player for us but I cant see him getting any better than he is. I think it'll be good business to use him as part of a deal to get in Kane.

Tbh I’ll be astounded if he gets a new improved contract because he doesn’t deserve it after this season’s absolute shocking performances . Bad business and he should be sold in my humble opinion but I hope I’m wrong anc he comes back firing bug he is gonna have to really up his game .

I don’t understand those who think he is a worldie, or ever was, and that he SHOULD get a new deal.

The problem is, if City aren’t interested in a bigger long term contract, he might see his REAL big payday as running down the clock and taking a big signing bonus for a Bosman.

You don't understand why a club would offer it's top scorer over the last 3 years (since he signed his last contract) a new contract?

Sterling has been having a tough time ever since we sold Sané and, more recently, when we started playing with a false 9 this season. I think his best stretch of form for us was when he was a proper "out and out" winger on the right hand side. He's just not effective on the left. The problem is that Mahrez is essentially the established first choice winger on the right these days, and Foden is much more effective on the left, so where does that leave Sterling? Having said all of that, I still rate him massively, and it'd be a shame if we let him go. If nothing else, he's a quality option to have in the squad and, as long as his new wage is reasonable, it doesn't make sense to not extend his contract.

To be fair to him he has never ever done anything to remotely indicate that he has tantrums

How come?
I don't know wherever he will or won't be brilliant but I think he gets a bit more freedom to play his natural game with the national squad.
Hes encouraged to attack his fullback whilst we expect him to be a lot safer in the build up.
We will see soon enough. I m rooting for him to have a stormer because it can only benefit City if he does.

I can see him looking better playing for England as he won't be playing with as many technically gifted players, and also the way Southgate has them playing as you say.

The issue remains though when he returns to us, and he has far more technical demands placed on him.

Interesting times ahead for Sterling, let's see what pans out

It’s still early in his current contract, he’s looking for his big “pay day” contract, while coming off a poor season where he’s not even in the First XI!

He’s being kept out of the team by a youngster on half his wages, if that, yet everyone seems to think he should be entitled to the £1M+/month contract reserved for superstars. I don’t get it!

I’d love to know how many of his goals have been scored from outside the 6 yard box, or even outside of 10 yards. Your Mum could have scored half the goals he’s scored, and a few he’s missed!!!

Did he get himself into those positions? Of course! But, is he one of the standard bearers of this team going forward? I don’t think so.

I think he has regressed this season. I think he thinks too much at times, and not enough at others. Ergo, his decision making…in the prime of his career & as an England Captain(!)…is poor, his play is predictable, and, sadly, one of his biggest contributions feels like getting into the box and being fouled.

His attitude is great! I love that he has taken significant media bias and racism in stride and has been a leader of his community, speaking out about his own experiences with that bias. In short, he seems like a top man off the pitch. But, I’m only talking here about what I’ve seen ON the pitch this season, and in others.

If you were going to rank the quality of players in this team going forward, where would he rank?

Now, rank them by wages and length of contract.

Is there a disparity in Sterling’s case?

Its disappointing Raheem isnt in his best form because on his day he would prove to be a potential match winner , just our luck probably our most consistent goal scorer over the last few seasons cannot hit a barn door at the moment and just before one of our biggest games in our history
Hope he scores a hat trick against Everton plays a blinder and gives Pep something to think about.
