Lol. No bad faith here pal, just telling what some dont like to hear I guess

I'm not convinced. A lot of your replies give the impression of someone trying to obfuscate at every turn. But my apologies if those are just clumsy attempts to understand what others are saying.

Gen Q
Do you honestly believe Sterling's poor touch, control etc will somehow magically disappear if we bring in a top striker?

Is this not a perfect example of what I'm talking about?

No, I don't think Sterling technical ability will magically increase simply because we sign a striker in the same way that I don't think Messi will grow half a foot taller if he gets reunited with Pep.

What I do think, is that the team would be much better off with a natural goalscorer rather than continuing with a perpetually injured one and another who has been suffering from confidence issues pretty much since the 2018 world cup.

At that point, I don't think Sterling carries a disproportionate amount of goalscoring responsibility on his shoulders and I think a large number of his critics will pipe down because of it.

He has never and will never be the best technical footballer on our team and that's nowhere near as important as some of you want to make out. Otherwise we'd have picked up Yannick Bolasie on loan but we're running a football team, not a circus.

About the level you should expect in a thread about Sterling. It's pretty clear that a minority don't give a fuck about his ability as a footballer.

If you can't think of a reason why someone would support Sterling's place in our squad other than his skin colour then I believe there's a word for that.

Shame that this simple word sends people into a frenzy when they're called out on it because I can't be arsed having the mods lock the thread and remove half the comments ten minutes later.

Indeed.

You know what's funny, and I've thought about this A LOT. James Milner is literally 1/4 of the footballer that Sterling is. Yet he was loved right up until he ran his contract down and moved to them. People were desperate for us to give him a new deal because of his "commitment", his "professionalism", basically he was "one of us".

Definitely makes you wonder ...

OK, we have some common ground in that we both agree Sterling isn't the best technical footballer, nor will likely be whoever we bring in to support.

In big games, we never know which Sterling is likely to show, although his track record isn't great, so is looking to improve on that such a bad disposition to have?

Would a more technically gifted player, given the same positional coaching that Sterling was afforded by Pep not:

> eliminate unnecessary risk from Sterling having " a moment" in a big game
> make the team stronger and more competitive

I get his goal scoring record which is what many use as his value, but should we not look to improve when we know there are issues in his game which are unlikely at this stage of his career going to go away?

I agreed with you on this one. It was a very strange comment to make

It's sad but I don't even really think about it anymore because it's so obvious and I've just accepted that it's an unfortunate part of life as a football supporter and how certain people's minds work. Just educate the next generation a bit better.

Still challenge it every single fucking time in person but on here you have to pick your battles.

The entire thread presents that sort of challenge for me, which is why I brought up the Milner example and why I've said a few times that I don't understand the over analysis and bad faith arguing which seems to pass for discussion in this thread.

Seems that those who don't rate Sterling have convinced themselves that there's a perfect player out there who will give the team everything that Raz does, plus will have the technique of Mahrez, never miss a chance, and somehow elevate the team.

Yeah, we should always look to improve regardless.

I've never, ever been opposed to giving Sterling more competition. That's why I was initally over the moon at bringing Torres in. It's also why I was so happy with Foden getting more minutes on the left wing when Sterling was playing like shit.

What I can't stand for is the sheer level of disrespect the guy gets. It's one thing to criticise his touch or to lose your shit when he misses like he did against united or Lyon but it's another entirely to constantly undermine everything he's done for us.

I can't speak for others, but Sterlings football ability is the only thing i give a fuck about, hence the enormous frustration and continued discussion regarding his lack of such with large elements of his game.
Burying your head in the sand and pretending he is something he isnt, while now adding sinister insinuation into the thread.....is disgraceful and does nobody any favours or allow for healthy debate.

No one is saying Sterling is a bad player, but he is most definitely not at the level he should be or that some of you are claiming.
