Coronavirus (2021) thread

The Mail has been sensationalising health claims since the dawn of time, it's not a COVID thing.

There's a website dedicated to documenting this.

If people stopped buying or clicking on their crap, they'd stop churning it out.
The BBC, Martin Bashir and the royals should keep Covid off their front page for several days. I’m not sure which is worse!!

Probably not many interested but I know one or two have relatives in the Czech Republic, so a brief update on the situation here:

Cases down to 672 yesterday, which is the lowest since last August and a far cry from a couple of months ago when we had the highest rates in Europe and over 17,000 cases (population just over 10M).

Vaccinations, after a slow start, are ramping up and we should have between 50 and 60% of the population with at least one dose by the end of June. 30% with both doses.

Lockdown measures have been eased and outdoor dining/drinking is now allowed. Shops all open. Hotels will open up again from Monday (but doubt there will be many tourists with hotels reporting likely bookings of between 10 and 30% for the Summer). Schools are back, much to to the displeasure of my daughter - though she has had only 6 weeks in school in the last 14 months and there are only 5 weeks to go before her Summer holidays.

All in all, the situation is looking much brighter than it did in Feb/March when hospital beds were at full capacity and we were having to send patients to Germany and Poland.

Fingers crossed it holds and we can continue to get more people vaccinated in a hurry and keep this thing under some sort of control.

That’s where the comment is shallow. There is no no control to reduce flu cases and we still only average 11000 deaths a year. Flu is left to do ita worse and that's the worst it manages. To compare a heavily regulated Covid outbreak is wishful thinking. So to flippantly suggest we consider lockdown because of the number of flu cases is a stupid comparison. We are no longer in lockdown and Covid cases would probably have to jump significantly and possibly above flu before lockdown was reintroduced.
But there is control. The health authorities look at what strains of flu are likely to hit us over the next year and brew a vaccine to counteract tge expected strains. Most of the time they guess right sometimes they get it slightly wrong but the vaccine reduces flu deaths over the winter.
The same will happen for Covid.
New vaccine technologies mean they can now make the decision later and be more accurate.

But there is control. The health authorities look at what strains of flu is a yearly flu vaccine
The efficacy is entirely different. If, like flu, the vast majority of people vaccinated from Covid need nothing more than a few days off work/school then we'll be alright as a population. We need to establish the framework globally to monitor Covid and achieve this, and at the moment an entire generation haven't even been offered a vaccine yet, and if the vaccines reduce transmission then we're leaving the population most likely to spread it around and cause outbreaks unchecked. So we still have work to do before we can really look at having a normal approach to this.

Good to hear, mate, and thanks for update.

We only tend to hear about the surge but not the decline in our media. I've just subscribed to New York Times which gives more informative coverage of Covid worldwide.

bit more colour on the insider

The Indian variant is a "major issue" and "may well delay" the June 21 grand reopening, a scientific adviser for the Government has warned.

Professor Peter Openshaw, who sits as a member on the Government's New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (Nervtag), while he "desperately" hopes the final unlocking of society can happen, the new variant is a concern.

He told the BBC's Radio 4 Today programme: "I think all of us are so anxious to get back to some sort of normal life, but I would say at the moment that we absolutely have to redouble the efforts to get everyone who is eligible for a vaccine vaccinated."

But asked if he thinks the June 21 is attainable given the trajectory of the cases of the Indian variant, he said: "Well I think just looking at the rate of rise of the Indian variant, I personally would feel very concerned that this is going to become quite a major issue over the next few weeks and that may well delay the further opening up."

Very informative thread on relative risk across the country and the potential effect of the India variant.

"Get adolescents jabbed" would be my conclusion.

Got my results back from my antibody test which test for both antibodies from the virus(natural infection) and antibodies to the spike protein(vaccine). I'm immune supressed so wasn't expecting much but the results came back as >2500u/ml which is the highest level in the table. Really happy with that obviously.

Great stuff.

Excellent news ;-) Thanks for the update.
