Back in the day, Beckham had just burst into the scene, I think he might have even scored his famous goal. World Cup 98 was around the corner and the media were clamouring for Beckham to go to it. The media are full of red team supporting fanboys, they want their favourites being picked, its why England never wins, its why Phil face would get picked for England or Henderson, and why they'd leave out lingard. Its how England picks its squad Southgate had no choice but to take taa, the hatred from the newspapers and media would have crushed him and any chances England have of winning a tournament.

There is no justification for those 4 players all to be in a 26 man squad when he's only taking two natural strikers and 5 midfielders (one not having any match fitness).

Trippier can play right back or left back -then why take 5 other full backs?
James and Walker can both play as a right sided CB - he's also picked 4 centre backs
Trent can play as a right sided midfielder - How many wingers do we need?!

That side would excite,as well as dominate.It would rekindle plenty of missing interest.

Shaw has been outstanding,definitely the best left back in our league andnot just Englands.Chilwell is a good player,but he doesnt quite have Shaws consistency or quality.

Why not drop two of them and name another centre back and a right sided midfielder?

How has Sancho been inconsistent? Lingard has had a good few months after he had about 2 years of doing nothing. If Southgate picked Lingard this place would have been in full meltdown.

Playing right sided CB in a 5 is different from playing as a CB in a 2.

Again there's a difference between playing as a right winger/wing back in a back 5 than playing as a winger in a front 3.

So it's likely that Southgate plays as a back 5 and 2 of the right backs are both playing.

I don't disagree with you on strikers, I would have taken Bamford, I also would have taken Ward-Prowse over Henderson because as you have rightly said, Henderson has been injured for half of a season.
