I have much the same feelings as you on this.

If you take away the goals there's nothing about him that says striker. Up until 2008 that would've been a redundant point but these days being a striker is more than just goals.

With Torres, he's definitely got what it takes to be a goalscoring player of some kind, but as a striker literally every single game that he doesn't score he's going to stink the place out because he's spent his career as a winger so doing the non-goalscoring stuff as a striker will be alien to him.

You've actually typed out the additional points I was going to make immediately above as I was typing this post out!

Basically all the stuff Torres wouldn't do right there is all the stuff most people don't notice Jesus does rather well at times.

It's a shame you can't just fuse Torres and Jesus sometimes. You'd have a complete winger or striker for whatever the occasion calls for.

He scores goals you can't take them away to try and prove a point , as for doing nothing if he's not scoring, hope your watching the spain game

I've been banging on how good this guy will be for us next season and his performance today only reinforces that view.

Coukd be important for us this coming season. Seeing lots of players facing burnout, especially after the added euros too.
he should be relatively fresh

Very forward like finishing, from a winger,I actually disagree with you on torres, I think he will make a great "city" forward, be it through the middle or drifting wide

I'd say its exactly the kind of finish an inside forward would do, cutting in from the wing.

Very good finish but hells bells Croatia deserve that for not bothering to defend someone standing in 20 yards+ at the restart.

Edit: I make that 40+ yards

Just because someone scores a lot of goals doesn't make them a striker.

Messi
Ronaldo
Sterling
Salah
Mané
Foden
Son

Are examples of players who all have shown a real aptitude for scoring goals at some time or another. All wingers. It's normal. Their ability to get into goalscoring positions is largely based on them not being strikers.

Some people are stuck with the concept of positions.
He has strengths and they need to be developed rather than needing to label him
People also underestimate his positional knowledge for such an inexperienced player.
Strikers make runs in and accross. Alternate between pulling the defender short, go in behind.

Wingers make them in behind. Inside or out, they are going for the fullback.

Inside forwards go for the space between fullback and CB - or drop deeper in between the lines to carry the ball and deliver significant passes into the box.

What is he doing? Whenever you see him? Staying wide. Isolating the defender. Good movement of the wingery sort.

He's good on the outside on the left, deliver crosses. Fine on the inside on the right. Poach in in the area. That is still ...a winger?

He still isolates the opponent and tries to beat him. He's not roving horizontally to pick the ball up in pockets in phases of play - which would make him more of an inside forward / number 10.

He's more of a winger than Salah, for me. Salah is capable of playmaking and dropping deep to get possession.

Less of a false nine than most of those who play there for us or Barca, although that is hard to explain. He's just not involved enough with the midfield in those phases. His use of the body against a defender isn't quite the same as the others. He's very biased towards looking to wriggle free on the other side. And then us the ball. And he doesn't do the off the shoulder runs.

He looks quite like Di Maria, but Di Maria was able to operate as midfielder, central even, because of his dynamism. You could play Di Maria as a striker, but he'd need a proper striker, and it was never really worth it. Di Maria needed to be a winger. They try all the time to make someone fit in. Ferguson tried to make Rooney more of a number 9, and it never happened. He just didn't have it. Ended up as always someone who needed a strike partner.

Same here. He's a winger. He can do more, but it's not really worth persevering with when his talent is that obvious - despite him knowing how to finish. That will enhance his game as a winger.

What I want to see from him, is better short passing. That would mean far more than arsing around in the middle trying to be a striker.
