Running thread

Ran 10k at half 6 Monday morning before work. Not sure who I have become in a previous life would have been hungover, struggling to get up at 8 for work. Today decided to do 5k but keep heart down. Really struggled to keep it out of zone 5 unfortunately. Wasn't worried about time or pace but just kept watching heart rate which was usually between 1.56-1.58. Going to keep trying to get it down
Hi ob, Ive just seen your run on strava before seeing this post, when you say your heart rate was 1.56 do you mean 156? Thats quite low for a zone 5 run, are you sure you have your zones set up right on your watch?
If your at 156 for zone 5 then you would need to be miles lower for a zone 2 easy pace, Im guessing but maybe around 110, which would make you super fit. Might be worth checking your settings mate

Thanks mate, I thought Garmin did it automatically when I entered age, weight etc. I quite new to running and keeping fit, lost about stone n half in last 18 months and did couchto5k middle of last year. Bought a Garmin about June 2020 and that's my first exercise in about 30 years.

Agree with @gaz76 Zone 5, for me is a heart rate of 166 and above with Heart rate 4 being between 148 - 166.

Cheers, I'm almost 60 and when I looked online it says start with 220 and extract age for top zone, no Idea how to set it other than that

To be blunt, that advice is wrong.

To find your resting HR:
Measure your pulse when you wake up - before you get out of bed - for three days in a row and take the mean average.

To find your max. HR:
Find a big hill. Warm up for a bit. Run up it as fast as you possibly can and jog down. Repeat at least five times and measure your HR at the end of the last one. You need to be pretty much dying for it to be accurate (only do this now and then because it is a big strain). Some say then add 5 to this figure but there's a bit of a debate about that.

Enter your resting and max. HR into your Garmin.

World athletics is seeing some astonishing performances: Athing Mu (19) running the 2nd fastest 800m by a US athlete (1:59:09) and Erriyon Knight breaking Usain Bolt's world junior 200m record (19:88) at just 17 are just two examples. This Olympics is destined to see some astounding times.

Also the young woman breaking the 400m hurdles world record at 19. Seems like the states are absolutely flying on the track.

Yes, Sydney McLaughlin, thanks for the reminder. I heard someone say that this could well be the first women's 100m final where every athlete dips under eleven seconds. It is such a shame that the world record is so far away, and so tainted, just like Kratochvilova's 800m record which has stood for nearly forty years.
In England, Max Burgin has broken the European U20 record, at just 18, with 1:44:14 in the 800m, the fastest time in the world this year and faster than Coe, Cram or Ovett ran at the same age.

Problem is with the clever techniques available these days, it's hard to consider them genuine after all the athletes that have turned out to be tainted.

It isn't, in my view. You just have to believe in the ethics of sport and the principle of innocent until proven guilty. Of course, I have tainted that with my comments about Kratochvilova and Griffith-Joyner, but time has cast too much doubt on their abilities. At the time, their performances and improvements were considered to be beyond belief too but athletes like McLoughlin, Knight, Burgin, and Jakob Ingebrigsten have been delivering from a very young age, as was Usain.

Shame for Dina Asher that the year delay in Olympics has meant such an increase in talent as well. Seems there are about 4 or 5 who could genuinely win on the day and she is one. Really looking forward to the olympics.

Not been running much for a while now, maybe one or two 5k’s per week, really struggling with tendonitis in both of my achilles, although my left is much worse than right.

Can only assume I need some complete rest but just can’t face it, play football 3 times a week which aggravates them badly, I’m like a cripple when I get out of my pit in a morning, but I just enjoy footy and couldn’t live without it.

Rejoined the gym yesterday for the first time since the pandemic started, so going to try and build back up on spin classes and hope the lack of impact in doing those might help somewhat.

13.1 miles this morning with my girlfriend, fastest she’s ever done in 2:21….(10:40 per mile average)
Nice to run in the lower heart zones and must say I feel really comfortable after it, shes fucked though haha!! Serves her right for moaning all the way round.

well done son

I've had this a few times. It always coincides with a new pair of footy boots. If I go back to using my old ones again, it disappears quite quickly. This also confirms it was the new boots causing the problem.

For this reason, I always stick with Nike football boots. Anything other - especially Adidas - gives me achilles tendonitis again.

I've never had this after a change in running shoes - maybe because the heel cushioning is better.
