Bluemoon Angling Thread

See my post above mate. Bradford Number One is the best by a mile.

I think what put me off Bradford No 1 was that all their river matches seemed to be on one stretch of the Nidd and matches tend to be won with just one or two barbel or chub. Whereas York have the Ouse which is perhaps more like the fishing that I am used to.

Bradford does seem to have some good stretches for the pleasure angler though and I'll have a further look into it.

Bradford No 1 is the best all rounder club for the Yorkshire rivers, easily. It’s Yorkshire’s version of PAAS.

As an aside, I’d strongly recommend anyone planning to fish this week thinks hard about it. The heat has depleted the oxygen levels so fish will die after being released. Barbel and pike are the worst affected.
I’m on the lake on Saturday. The fish are holding 40 feet down. I think we will be killing them rather than c@r. (If we catch any).

You could and maybe should do both. I learned the craft on the Swale at Richmond which had all sorts in it (Grayling, Trout, Dace, Chub and Barbel). 70% of the time I course fished and 30% flyfished. You could certainly fly fish on the nidd, ure, wharfe as well as the Swale. The Swale is a really lovely river, just brown trout above the falls at Richmond but increasingly course fish as you move down river.
Fly fishing doesn't need to be expensive. You could get all you need for £200 to get you started. A 5 weight rod and floating line is all you need to start and then add to it as you go. A couple of hours with a casting coach would be good money spent to get you up and running. Happy to go into as much detail as you want mate but there are days that you just want to stay light on the river and cover a lot of water and fly fishing is ideal for that. I don't course fish now living in Scotland but I wouldnt imagine it would be any more costly to get started again with a general purpose rod and fixed spool reel. I went Barbel fishing on the Wye and fully expected to fall in love with Course fishing all over again. I had a great day but still wouldnt swap it for casting the fly.
Fly fishing also opens up a brand new hobby - fly tying, but enough of that here.
Cheers. Might be an idea to have a go at both before deciding.

Ah right. I didn’t consider the match scene in the club. The more local, small clubs tend to focus more on matches in my experience.

Do you have anyone to take you out fly fishing? Even a half day with someone who really knows what they are doing would be worth the price. I’m sure Paul Procter operates on these rivers. It would give you more of an insight far quicker than having to muddle through yourself and potentially get put off.

I've bagged it for the moment. Even from a personal comfort point of view, I much prefer the cold to this heat.

A quick google search seems to come up with a rather attractive young lady in my area that offers fly fishing coaching. Maybe leaning that way now ;-)

I found Paul Proctor too, so I have some options. Thanks.

There is another guy called Oscar Boatfield that I know and have fished with. He is a good angler and a character and is based in N Yorks. Paul Procter is a very seriously good river fly fishing international. I did hear a whisper he was giving up guiding so if you get the chance for an outing with him I would grab it. Good luck whatever you chose.

I went for a paddle on the Little Ouse today, saw a dead zander 3 or 4 lb and a nice bream both dead floating on the top.. I’ve lived right next to the river for 10 years, only ever saw a dead pike

Looks lovely. How does it fish?
Loads of pike in spite of the otters.. Good bream ,, big carp a bit further upstream.. our stretch is Rudd central , loads of small stuff but once you get through those the bigger Rudd are a lovely fish..
The whole river is full of fish,, a great place to learn for any budding anglers .. caught a medium size tench as well
