Messi had the skill of Maradona combined with the goal scoring of Pele and Ronaldo.

Maradona was never a great goal scorer (although a scorer of great goals) like Messi was on top of his incredible natural ability.

Although tbf, barely anyone ever saw Maradona play on anywhere close to a regular bases unless you went to the games, whereas Messi has unparalleled exposure. No one saw those periods where Maradona apparently phoned it in for long periods.

He is the real deal, has done it everywhere, even at 36 he performs.

I don't like the guy but I have total and utter respect for him as a player, the way he looks after himself and the way he reinvents as a player.

He has tested himself in major leagues and his performance levels are incredible.

Putting aside the Man U narrative, I've heard via my sister-in-law in Madrid that he is actually perceived as a really nice guy over there. Off the pitch he is apparently a lot more down to earth and does a lot of charity stuff, auctioning some of his individual trophies for causes, gives blood etc.

One thing I think we can agree on is that he is ultra professional. To be 36 and still competing at the highest level says alot about his commitment to the game and love of winning football matches.
