The arguments aren't really about the pass though, are they? Most people agree he should have done better.

It's people using this pass (and Aké's unfortunate slow reactions) as a reason to say how bad a footballer he is and how bad he played, completely ignoring all the good stuff he did right up until that moment, this match and the season before it.

He's cumulative; these sorts of incidents are happening with Rodri virtually every game. He's done it against Chelsea, Monchengladbach, PSG, Brighton. His form has completely nosedived and he's making errors in the worst possible position to make those errors.

That's the most Rodri screenshot possible. Not the first time players are screaming at Rodri to pass forward when he's got time and space but he goes backwards. Gundogan found himself doing it regularly enough last season that he could have passed for a Mcmanaman tribute act.

He receives the ball facing Grealish, there is no Leicester player within a 10 yard radius of him.

A proper top quality midfielder would know this and let the ball run across his body and start the attack.

Rodri like so many times and more frequently now reverts to type and his first thought is backwards.

The reason Daka gets his shot away is because Dias has lost him because he did not expect Rodri to play such a pathetic ball and was on his way up the pitch.

In the space of 4 seconds, Fernandinho starts off 5 yards behind him and ends up 5 yards ahead of him when the pass is made.

Two defensive players, expecting an attacking phase of play.

Sums it all up.

Hate to be harsh on a player, but Rodri is toilet and I can't believe we face another season this reliant on him. Fern's on his last legs and all we have is Rodri in that 6 role.

People will focus on Ake's error, but miss the fact that Rodri received the ball in space with an opportunity to get his head up and be positive to put us on the counter. Options all around him. Instead, he takes a touch with his head down, turns his back on everyone and plays a hopeless backpass to Ake, who was pointing up the pitch and had a man on him. I've watched it back and even Dias was pointing up the pitch when Rodri played that ball. Then what happened happened.

Rodri is gash I'm afraid and this is a persistent trend with him. He isn't good enough. his should be a priority postion for us to strengthen, just as much as upfront for me.

All the good things?

Played a few bread and butter passes, got wrong side of his man a couple times and had to clumsily bring them down or let them go as per, and played a couple shocking passes?

This game was Rodri all over and I've had enough tbh. He's not good enough.

Can I ask something? If I were to ask Pep Guardiola why he's consistently been starting Rodri in DM since he arrived, and likely to continue to do so, when he's got a legitimate legend like Fernandinho available, what do you think he would say?

‘Gash’ not sure any of our players can be described as that. He may have his faults but he has played a huge amount of games in a very successful and title winning team. Ridiculous over reaction.

Fernandinho is on his last legs and Rodri is literally the only other 6 we have.

29 year old Fernandinho on a prosthetic leg would be a better player than Rodri.

The Rodri experiment/trust has failed and it should be a priority position to strengthen. The only reason it isn't is because we're crying out for a striker, and we're all praying Rodri will come good. It hasn't happened.

Pep's put a lot of trust in him, because he's had to. And he hasn't repaid it.

Ok. Do you really think Pep Guardiola would say that? This is the guy that played Fernandinho at LB because in 2017 because of how bad he thought our options were back then, but now he persists with Rodri despite him being a failure? We have two excellent DM options in Gundogan and Fernandinho who have both PROVEN they can be successful there long term. If Rodri was as awful as you suggest you'd think Pep would give them a few more cracks at the whip.

I think you can't answer my question in a genuine way. I think deep down you know there's a reason why Pep keeps picking him, and it's to do with things Rodri does well and how he brings things to the team.

Let me guess, before anyone pulls you up on it you're going to tell me that the 20+ match win streak last season was in spite of Rodri?

He's the single worst senior outfield player we have at the club, bar Mendy. I know the bar's high but that's the reality. Literally the only reason he features regularly is because Pep has no choice. Fernandinho is the only other 6 and he's on his last legs. Gundogan isn't suited to a holding role.

We genuinely have better footballers at centre half, and Fernandinho is a better athlete despite the fact he's not far from collecting his bus pass.

Rodri is a decent option when we're flat track bullying the league's dross, but if he's in any shape or form required to be tested in or out of possession in a tightly contested game, forget about it.

I see he still has a few fooled on here. Just for clarity Pep dropped him around march last season. Nothing has happened since to suggest he has progressed. Annoyingly negative ( like some posters). Looks like we're stuck with him again.
Rodri wasn't dropped.

You're doing that thing, he missed the PSG game and the final Chelsea game, and you're all assuming Pep stopped rating him all of a sudden.

I answered your question, it was a dumb hypothetical. Pep works with what he has and has prioritised a striker because we're crying out for one.

The holding role is absolutely pivotal to the football his sides play. He's had Xavi/Busquets in there at Barca, and Alonso/Lahm in there at Bayern. At City he's had Fernandinho, and Rodri doing the bare minimum against the league's dross.

He's an enormous weak link and I'll be absolutely astounded if we don't sign a 6 next summer, possibly even in January.

I feel like in some games he flatters to deceive but when under pressure he's not got it where it counts...of course pep plays him because he cost us a fortune. I suppose you can give him the benefit of teh doubt today with it only being a tin cup etc...but it wasnt a good showing.

Really. So how do you explain his performance in the win at PSG last season which was a very tight game. And our superb performance at Chelsea away?

It's amazing how we can win titles and cups when Pep insists on consistently picking crap players.
