If we get Kane we don’t sign a player to stop others getting him. If we get Kane were Haaland goes isn’t our concern.

I hear you but I'm not sure it's quite about who will pay him the most.

I suspect the long term gains are more important.

That means creating the best opportunity to win CL and improve his "brand" which is a concept that has become more prevalent across the entertainment industry over the past few decades.

I commented on this here in October 2020, and by this I mean player not from the UK or at least England (Grealish doesn't count), as they see City in a higher light given our success in England for over the past decade:

All top clubs want Haaland and I struggle to see how we are in any kind of favoured position to land him even if we offer more than the 60m release clause (we hear about).

Reality now is none of the recent young mega-stars really pick us or even England, in general.

They all want the big warmer, sunnier glamorous Spainish clubs, and Real Madrid and Barca do have holes currently or are aging in their front line...

Haaland might be able to get the respect [by joining City vs. big Spanish clubs with larger followings], but I do wonder.

One advantage that became more clear since I wrote that was Barca's financial mess, and that maybe Halland would play for us because he did spend time here, and seems he and Foden are mates.

Another is we finally made a CL final and we are looking like that is a strong possibility for the foreseeable future.

Many young professional athletes of the highest tier today are often deeply ingrained in the concept of making their “brand.”

It’s a generational difference in attitudes about tribalism and loyalty that came from realising many talented players can have short careers where agents and sport player unions have come to show them that the clubs and even fans at times, don’t often care about the players because of the cut throat nature of the game...

What this means is that the concept of loyalty to clubs, where you come from, etc. does not mean the same as they have been taught from athletes also in other professions and agents, like the NBA who have players who love football, and vice versa (see the London NBA game last year with many big PL players in attendance)...

When he went to Dortmund his father and he were careful and calculating about choosing with Raiola Dortmund over United.

I believe Raiola, Haaland and his father are looking to maximise his brand and likelihood of reaching the top level as a global megastar footballer.

This is why club reputation matters.

Sure, we can overpay and keep things somewhat within the wage structure, somehow, but I am not sure if this will be enough as the truth is playing for City, we are not as known of a club to casual football supporters or non-football fans.

If he’s a different personality than that would be a welcome surprise, but Haaland strikes me as a highly ambitious, “build your brand” oriented player (Neymar, Mbappe, Sancho, Pogba) where going to City now isn’t going to be the best choice for his career, given what I wrote above. Maybe coming back to Manchester later on when he’s older would be a nice feel good story to help his brand going.

Yes, whoever signs him will pay whatever Raiola thinks he can get but whether City are the club who is assessed to best build his "brand" is another question.

United and RM have a larger global brand name fanbase, and gain more media attention outside and even inside of football as a result.

I don't think we CAN'T sign him, but whether a club offer the most in wages feels unlikely to be the only factor to determine his destination.

I'm Glad that Raiola and Pep don't have to talk to do any of the deal so not really worried about that, just need to make sure Haaland is sold the sporting idea, the playing for the same club as his dad, the club he supports.... he can even have a pick of 9 or 15

We can't ban a players current agent from the ground or refuse to speak to him. That isn't how businesses work.

This is nonsense. Footballing ambition doesn't equal City or Pep. This is the kind of stuff Rags used to say a decade ago and it made so many of us cringe.

We hope he comes here if we show interest. But it's no given. And not coming here is not a show of lack of ambition. Frankly, to go somewhere lesser and them mount a challenge to City, might in fact be a greater show of ambition.
