The idiocy (and selfishness) of panic buying

More than that have retired over the last few years. And those 15k going back into the Euro pot haven’t made a blind bit of difference to their shortage of drivers. There’s also huge shortages of drivers in Asia and North America.

and how do you know that, The figures I've seen are old figures and pre brexit. Also there's no problems in any EU country at the moment

Ironically for us in the north west, the UK's biggest manufacturer of bog roll is in Salford. Or maybe it was Oldham.

Either way it's all made round here.

There are various locations around the uk and like paper making in general water quality is vital. The biggest player is Essity who have 5 or six sites the biggest of which is in Prudhoe, the next biggest company is Kimberley Clark whom have a huge site in Barrow.

Most new machines can bang out bog roll at around 800/1000 meters a min with web a width of 7/8 meters, we were never running out just the usual sheep buying more than was needed.

The numbers are held by the ONS. Around 20,000 drivers have retired in the last two years in the UK. The average age for drivers is 55, 1% of drivers are under 25.

The European Road Freight Transport released a report in 2018 that said Germany had 45,000 vacancies for HGV drivers’ jobs and predicted that would rise by 28,000 a year.

This is the scale the problem of shortages now:

124,000 driver shortage in Poland.

Information on shortages across many countries, and it’s a problem going back 15 years:

Also there’s the issue of more than 230,000 HGV licence holders in Britain under the age of 45 who are not actually working in haulage. 25,000 new drivers pass their test every year in Britain. This makes the 15,000 lost due to Brexit seem minimal. As you can see here, we’ve lost 60,000 drivers from our own pool:

EU drivers make up around 10.5% of our driver pool. We need to be asking why so many HGV licence holders aren’t driving instead of blaming things that are only minimally to blame.

The issue is exacerbated by Brexit though. Red tape and delays at Dover/Calais mean less drivers are travelling from/to the U.K.

Couple that with the driver number issue and we have the perfect storm that the rest of Europe don’t. Hence we have food/fuel issues and they don’t.

Voting to leave the EU was, IMO, the wrong thing to do, that though wasn't the government's fault. Then COVID came along, again not the fault of the government. Can the government do something now to address the imbalance, very possibly but companies themselves have to start taking responsibility and stop blaming others for their shortcomings. Why is there a backlog of HGV tests still?

Worst take I have ever seen on bluemoon lol. Even worse than the Petrov at left back suggestion!

Cameron shit it from Farage and gambled our futures away to stay in power, then jumped ship when it all went to pot.

A lot of foreign drivers were laid off at the start of the pandemic due to a reduction in demand.
I don't blame them for going home and not wanting to come back.

But at the end of the day money always talks. If they get better paid here, they will be back.

Maybe. They won’t want to be starving on an airfield for two Christmases running though, which they could be if the checks take too long when they have to go home.

My guess is hardly any will come over. 3 months isn’t viable unless paid astronomical money.

Brexit minimally exacerbates this issue.

I’ve just added to my previous post: over 230,000 British HGV licence holders aren’t working in haulage, 25,000 new HGV drivers pass their test each year but only a small percentage actually go into HGV driving jobs (and it’s £3,000 a pop for a test). We’ve lost 15,000 EU drivers but 60,000 of our own in the same time.

Went to M&S an hour ago and there were no chilies no 3 cheese pasta ravioli and no pre-sliced garlic bread.

I don't know how we are going to cope.

We weren’t promised we would have to cope. Sunlit uplands, a better, more advantageous deal with the EU, more choice and cheaper food and goods in the shops.

So where the fuck is this promised future and where can I buy it? Hopefully not too far away because I ain’t got much petrol left.

That is only taking driver numbers into consideration. There is also the issue of lorries having to either drive empty into the EU to collect goods, losing money for companies, or delays waiting for the loads to be checked, meaning even less drivers are mobile. This is the bit that Brexit has exacerbated most.

Companies are haemorrhaging money and some are going bust.

You’re getting there. Give it another month or so.

And who exactly voted to leave the EU or did Cameron just announce we were leaving. Petrov at left back even now is a better bet than Mendy!
